Spiritual tourism – enhancing the experience

Emerald publishes new study on the management of cultural sites

United Kingdom, December 2010 – India has long been considered a spiritual and cultural destination, attracting millions of visitors from around the world to its many ancient monuments and sites. One of the most important pilgrimage centers in India, the Tirupathi temple, attracts one of the largest number of tourists in India everyday and millions of Rupees are offered to the deity on a yearly basis. With such numbers, can those visitors seeking spiritual enlightenment be assured of such an experience?

A recently published special issue of Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes takes a practical look at the management of these spiritual places, and asks how the visitor's cultural and spiritual experience can be improved. Edited by Dr Vinnie Jauhari of the Institute for International Management and Technology, this special issue focuses on some of the very prominent places of spiritual and cultural interest in India.

Other sites chosen for study are the Buddhist tourism circuit, the Golden Temple at Amritsar, the Vaishno Devi shrine in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and two famous temples, the Deli-Lotus and ISKON temples, "India has a very rich culture and history which spans for more than 3500 years. This is evident from the richness of ancient monuments and sites of cultural interest. A birthplace of four religions, there is a lot of history attached to various cities in India", explains Dr Jauhari. "There are very interesting threads running across each of these destinations. In this issue, there are lots of suggestions for the policy makers, civic authorities as well as the management boards of these places".
