Beginning iPhone development</b><br>
<br>
Since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, Apple's iOS has come to
have a dominating presence in the smartphone market. Between them, the
iPhone and iPad look set to sell 120 million units this year, and half a
million apps are already on the iPhone App Store. But impressive as
these statistics might be, they don't provide a reason to engage with
the platform. So why learn to develop for the iPhone?<br>
<br>
The iPhone and its related family of devices (iPad and iPod Touch) are
packed with sensors - a touchscreen, 2 cameras, a microphone, an
accelerometer… taken together, whether used for productivity or games,
they provide an experience unthinkable a few years ago. Major advances
in human - computer interaction are being made right now, and it's time
to get involved.<br>
<br>
Apple's multimedia frameworks provide the low-level, responsive access
to the hardware that is required to create compelling apps.
Unfortunately, starting to program for the iPhone can be a daunting
prospect. It involves learning the Objective-C language, the Cocoa
frameworks and getting used to the XCode environment. There are plenty
of step-by-step guides on the internet and in print, but they can leave
you none the wiser. <br>
<br>
This course is aimed at those who already have a little experience of
programming, perhaps with a scripting language or a creative-coding
environment such as Processing. It will introduce Objective-C and the
concept of object-oriented programming, along with using Cocoa.<br>
<br>
The workshop will be given by Chris Jeffs, author of 4 apps on the store
that have been released this year. More info can be found at

<br>
<b>REQUIREMENTS - IMPORTANT!</b><br>
<br>
You MUST have a copy of XCode 4 running on your machine. This can be
found on the Mac App Store, or is available for no extra charge to
registered Apple developers.<br>
<br>
If you have any questions about the content or installing xcode, email <a href="mailto:2649@chrisjeffs.com">2649@chrisjeffs.com</a><br>
<br>
You don't actually need a device, as limited testing in the iPhone
simulator provided in XCode is possible. However, if you do wish to
install your apps onto real hardware (running iOS 4.3+), it is
recommended to sign up as a developer. This also allows limited ad-hoc
distribution. Information can be found
athttp://<a href="http://developer.apple.com/programs/ios/">developer.apple.com/programs/ios/</a>. Other solutions
(jailbreaking and so on) may work, but will not be covered in this
course.<br>
