<div>Art and Science Symposium on Renewable Energy Technologies</div>

<div>featuring "Biotricity" workshops - how to make electricity

from waste-water</div>

<div>July 26-28, 2012</div>

<div>Renewable Lab is a 3-day gathering and working session that aims

at exploring the potential of art and science collaboration in the

quest for a sustainable future. The symposium takes place from July 26

to July 28 in 'rural lab' settings in the Pedvale Open-Air Art Museum

and Salinas farm in Kurzeme region, North-East Latvia.</div>

The Renewable Lab symposium gathers together artists and scientists

who will introduce with their artistic explorations and scientific

research in the field of renewable energy technologies in order to

discuss how these two perspectives can be combined for develop

collaborative art-science projects in future.</div>

<div>The symposium features workshops conducted by artists and

scientists who will be experimenting with new generation

bio-technologies, hydroponics and other renewable energy technologies

and 'techno-ecological' ideas, in order to explore how to approach and

interpret them through artistic perspectives and cultural

innovation.</div>

<div>The main symposium event includes "Biotricity - how to make

electricity from the waste-water" workshop during which RIXC artists

Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits in collaboration with young biologists

Arturs Gruduls and Zane Rutkovska will conduct experiments with

so-called 'next-generation' bio-energy technology (called MFC -

microbial fuel cells). MFC technology is based on a

bio-electrochemical system that converts chemical energy to electrical

energy by using microorganisms - bacteria found in the commonly

available resource such as, for instance, wastewater. Participants of

the workshop will be building electricity generators outdoors in pond

and soil. Meanwhile Latvian artist Voldemars Johansons will be

experimenting with sonification of electrical signal generated by

"bacteria battery".</div>

<div>In parallel to "Biotricity" workshop Mikko Laajola will

conduct "Environmental monitoring and sustainable technologies"

workshop, together with participants designing and building

self-sustainable hydroponics gardening systems in pond of Pedvale and

Salinas farm.<br>

<div>The symposium will also feature workshop-presentations by

scientists from Hydrogen Lab of the Institute of Solid State Physics

at University of Latvia - Dr. Jaanis Kleperis and Vladimirs Nemcevs,

who will be discussing "water power" and "hydrogen tehnologies"

as well as demonstrating and testing their own made hydrogen car.

Artist Bartaku will present his research-based experiments in aronia

fields in Latvia and agave plantations in Mexico and how these plants

can be used as an alternative energy resource such as solar

technologies, while Christoph De Boeck and Patricia Portela will

introduce their sensors network of Hortus project, which measures

dynamics of wind and light and register how plants harvest energy from

natural resources. zThe Latvian biologist Ilze Dimanta and Finnish

artist Mia Makela will introduce with different perspective how to

look at Baltic Sea algae, considering it as an energy resource.</div>

<div>And last but not least, symposium will also include presentations

by interdisciplinary artists Aiste Goda Virsulyte and Vytautas

Kazimieras Juozònas from Lithuania, Marija Maric from Serbia as well

as participation by new media art students Maija Demitere, Rihards

Vitols, Gatis Vaitovskis and artist Anna Trapenciere from the MPLab,

Art Research Lab of Liepaja University, and artists and producers

Signe Pucena from Serde, Davis Bojars, Daina Silina and Agnese

Baranova from RIXC.</div>
