special event at the ISEA2011 Istanbul Education Workshop
titled</font><font face="Arial Bold" size="-3" color="#1B5987"> Brain
Drain/Brain Gain in Art, Science and Technology</font><font
face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818">, the Leonardo Electronic
Almanac is pleased to announce a special edition that will investigate
current pedagogic issues with a special emphasis on art & science
& technology education. In addition we will include in this
publication summary papers of various international educational events
and workshops from the last five years.</font><br>
<font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818"></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818">Over the last two
decades, we have witnessed the global emergence of both institutional
and informal/hybrid education initiatives. New departments have been
created, new academic positions inaugurated and brand new curricula
developed. In addition, an increasing number of international
educational exchange programs are facilitated and implemented in the
area of art & science & technology education each
year.</font><br>
<font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818"></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818">The
trans-disciplinary approach in education brings together arts, science
and technology experts and looks at responsive knowledge transfer for
the 21st century. Due to this radical shift in education - the
learning environment has completely changed. In this context new
paradigms in trans-disciplinary approaches vary from place to place
and are often shaped by the nature of the organizations and/or
institutions as well as financial and socio-cultural
considerations.<br>
Despite the widespread interest in digital culture and education, a
tension remains between academic and vocational education.</font><br>
<font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818"></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818">The inclusion of
practice based models involving academia are especially important,
because limited funding, escalating class sizes and threatened course
closures continue to be a serious challenge to effective training.<br>
In an era of fast technological growth and transforming art forms
there is an increasing need for educational flexibility by academic
institutions. It is essential to keep in mind that the profile of
higher education in the 21st century is going to be very different to
what it used to be.<br>
What is our role in this changing environment and how do we
proceed?<br>
Deliberations on the prevalent trends and the future of education
indicate that "innovation" combined with breakthrough partnerships
are considered keys to the future.</font><br>

<div><font face="Arial" size="-3" color="#191818">The Leonardo
Electronic Almanac (LEA) is inviting proposals from academics,
critical theorists and artists for this special issue investigating
the changes and innovation in the new culture of digital education.
