Liquid spaces – dynamic models of space in art and technology.
Art residency, Cluj, October, 3 – 20, 2012.
Turnul Croitorilor, str. Baba Novac, nr.35.

„ Liquid spaces – dynamic models of space in art and technology.” Is a residency program which gets toghether a group of young artists, actively involved internationally, interested in exploring the notion of space as defined by the cybernetic design and its applications. The development of what we commonly call Web 3.0 (Internet of Things), technologic system which enables responsive forms of communication between objects, as well as between objects and their users (human machine interaction) triggers several issues related to the way of defining space. Space can no longer be perceived as a „container”, but should be seen as a dynamic, adaptable, modular structure. The art residency program is intended to aid the creation of several art works which address the perception, building and handling of virtual space. The art works also target the subjective surfing of the urban space, space exploration by means of reactiv devices, including wearables. Also accompanied by a „Open Lab Days”, the art residency program wishes to open to the public in a less formal way the issues of the cybernetic design, by enabling the public to contemplate the artists’ methods of work, and by proposing a direct communication between the public and the artitsts.

The artists try to highlight the creation process in opposition to the art object. The creation process perceives the situations and contexts (including the social contexts) as essential to the art creation. Lately, the development of the Internet and of media wireless devices, the miniaturization of developing devices, the use of new intelligent fabrics have made the impact of cybernetics more and moe visible in everyday life. The emergeance of concepts such as "the Internet of things" confirms the current trend of connecting inanimate objects with the virtual space of communication, based on the human machine interaction. The present project is based on the exploration of the subjective action, on the impact and the potential of the cybernetic notions of space (dynamic, activated) for the creation of art works. The projects starts from the basis that the virtual space cannot substitute the real space, but, on the contrary, completes it and contributes to its development.

Last but not least, organizing this art residency within the project „Liquid space – dynamic models of space in art and technology” responds to a scarce number of opportunities of art creationrelated to the new media field on the European level. In Romania, these opprtunities are almost entirely absent. Our projects offers a framework which not only does enable the creationand the development of several art projects, but it also facilitates the exchange between artists while, most importantly, awakening the interest of the local public.
