Belorusets<br><br>“Euromaidan
– occupied spaces” is collection of photographs depicting everyday life
at the epicentre of a mass protest, focussing on the Euromaidan protest
in Kiev, Ukraine. <br>News from Ukraine, including the passing of new
laws aimed at crushing any form of protest or freedom of speech, is
getting worse day by day.<br><br>Euromaidan is an unified protest
containing multiple, often contradictory beliefs: dreams of a just
Europe, formed outside the EU’s borders; Far-Right, ultra-nationalist
values; hatred of the current system of governance and naming of
‘enemies’; demands for radical, democratic transformation – all these
meet in one protest space and try to coexist. <br>Yevgenia Belorusets’
photos show people spending night after night standing in protest on
freezing streets, sleeping in occupied government buildings. In the
darkness of this night, they can come under attack from riot police, and
must stand shoulder to shoulder to defend the hard-won main square of
the city from the State. Winter’s day is also spent on this square, or
warming up in underpasses and cafes.<br>Scenes of highly unstable life
in Ukraine today, transported into the sheltered European reality of an
exhibition space in Berlin, remind us of the necessity of refreshing our
definitions of our political goals. Fascism can grow fast in such
situations. But at the same time, in this case, the State is turning
into a dictatorship.<br>Belorusets’ photographs talk about the existence
and the blurring of borders, but also about solidarity, and its ability
to overcome these borders. <br><br>Context:<br>Maidan Nezalezhnosti or
Independence Square is a square in central Kiev and in November 2013 it
was taken over by the largest protest movement in Ukraine – now known as
Euromaidan - since the 2004 Orange Revolution.<br>Euromaidan’s
political position is still taking shape. In the meantime, it is a
platform for hugely diverse, and, at times, deeply controversial
statements. Euromaidan - occupied spaces is dedicated, amongst others,
to the protestors living in occupied state buildings, in Kiev City Hall,
the Trade Unions House and the October Palace.<br><br>Yevgenia Belorusets is an artist, social activist and author from Kiev, Ukraine. <br>OKK
Gallery (Organ Kritischer Kunst) is a platform for cultural activism and critical art and is located in Berlin,

Besetzte Räume ist eine fotografische Erzählung über das Leben im
Epizentrum der Massenproteste auf dem Kiewer Euromaidan. Die Proteste
begannen vor mehreren Wochen, die Situation verschärft sich zunehmend,
einschließlich der Verabschiedung neuer Gesetze, die gegen jegliche Form
von Protest sowie gegen die Meinungsfreiheit gerichtet sind.<br>Der
Euromaidan hat vieles vereint: idealistische Vorstellungen von Europa,
ultra-rechte und nationalistische politische Positionen, den Hass auf
die existierende Ordnung der Dinge im Land und den Wunsch nach radikalem
demokratischem Wandel. Dies Alles trifft sich in einem Protestraum und
versucht zu koexistieren.<br><br>Die Fotografien von Yevgenia Belorusets
sind den Menschen gewidmet, die auf den eisigen Straßen übernachten
oder im Zuge der Proteste Regierungsgebäude besetzten und nun dort
wohnen. Denen, die sich nachts den Angriffen der Spezialeinheiten der
Miliz aussetzen und Schulter an Schulter stehen, um den erkämpften
Hauptplatz der Stadt zu verteidigen. Auf diesem Platz verbringen sie die
Tage im Kiewer Winter und wärmen sich zwischendurch in Unterführungen
oder benachbarten Cafés.<br>Die Szenen aus einem aktuell äußerst
instabilen ukrainischen Alltag werden in eine behütete europäische
Realität – in einen Berliner Ausstellungsraum – übertragen. Sie erinnern
uns an die Notwendigkeit, vertraute politische und gesellschaftliche
Vorstellungen permanent selbst neu zu ordnen.<br>Die Fotografien von
Yevgenia Belorusets erzählen von der Existenz und dem Verwischen von
Grenzen, aber auch von einer Solidarität, die es ermöglicht, diese
Grenzen zu überwinden.<br>Die Ausstellung wird am 31. Januar um 19.00 Uhr in der Galerie okk/raum29 eröffnet (Prinzenallee 29, 13359
Berlin)<br><br>Hintergrund<br>Der
Platz der Unabhängigkeit (Maidan Nezalejnosti), einer der zentralen
Plätze Kiews, ist seit dem 21.11.2013 und bis zum heutigen Tag der Ort,
wo sich die größte Protestbewegung der Ukraine seit der Orangenen
Revolution versammelt. Diese Bewegung gab sich den Namen Euromaidan.<br>Eine
eigenständige politische Positionierung des Maidans formiert sich erst
mit der Zeit, währenddessen fungiert er als Bühne für verschiedene,
mitunter zutiefst widersprüchliche Standpunkte.<br>Die Ausstellung
Euromaidan. Besetzte Räume. würdigt vor allem den Alltag der
Protestierenden - in den besetzten Regierungsgebäuden, im Kiewer
Rathaus, im Haus der Gewerkschaften und im Oktoberpalast.<br><br>Yevgenia
Belorusets ist Künstlerin, soziale Aktivistin und Autorin aus der
