artistic context of Access Space;<br>A talk by Jake Harries, Creative
Producer<br><br>At Access Space, people interested in art, design,
computers,recycling,<br>music, electronics, photography and more meet
like-minded people, share<br>and develop skills and work on creative,
enterprising and technical<br>projects. Access Space runs Refab
Space, a DIY FabLab, developed and<br>completed in 2012. With its
suite of rapid prototyping tools, for<br>instance, a laser cutter and
3D printer, this benefits artists, business<br>start-ups and the
community as a whole.<br><br>As well as working with artists,
academics, creative technologists,<br>programmers, other
professionals and students, 50% of the participation<br>in Access
Space’s activities are from people in danger of exclusion and<br>on
the margins of society, including: people with disabilities,
homeless<br>people, ex-offenders, asylum seekers, refugees and people
with mental<br>health issues. Through Refab Space, Access Space
engages with self<br>starters and entrepreneurs as well. One of the
strengths of Access Space<br>is that it brings people from different
backgrounds together. We aim to<br>inspire people to do new creative
things; we aim to make a positive<br>impact on people’s lives
by helping them to get out of their comfort<br>zone in a supportive
environment.<br><br>We operate at a very low cost with a minimal
carbon footprint through<br>our innovative model, which combines
free, open source software and<br>locally sourced recycled
computers.<br><br>&<br><br>Alternative Finance Residencies by
artists at Access Space 2014<br>A talk by Jake Harries, Creative
Producer<br><br>Jake will introduce the Access Space artist residency
programme, with an<br>emphasis on the work of the two most recent
resident artists.<br><br>Artist & trader Kate Rich's residency,
Creative Accounting, on the<br>darker macro arts of economics, drew
on a wild expanse of research from<br>the mainstream to the outlier,
to map out some swathes of established<br>economic thought on paper
for a birds eye view of the habitat. These<br>maps had no pretence of
depicting reality, but instead laid out truths<br>that economists
hold to be self-evident. A careful reading of the system<br>is
essential in order to disrupt or even navigate it.<br>Kate Rich has
run Feral Trade, a trans-parochial grocery business and<br>underground
freight network using the art world as a transportation<br>resource
since 2003, and is banker at the artist-run Cube Cinema

& yarn bomber Ruthie Ford's residency, The Crocheted
Pound,<br>explored the subject of value in the arts and crafts as she
worked on<br>making a series of crocheted 'coins'. Onto each coin was
embroidered its<br>value: making time x hourly rate + materials-
showing the true value of<br>making crochet. Over the weeks these
coins stacked up to form an<br>installation within the space, and the
value was contrasted with the<br>price of similar items available on
the internet.<br>Ruthie sought to answer these questions: How do you
value crochet,<br>knitting and 'home craft' skills? What value would
you give the crochet<br>skills you have learnt? What skills/ goods
could you offer in exchange<br>for these skills? Would you be willing
to work in exchange for your<br>skills? We still need money! How can
skill exchange and working for<br>money work

– Jake Harries<br>Jake is Creative Producer at Access Space, and
has developed and run the<br>arts programme there since 2007. He is
an artist, musician, composer,<br>performer and has been making music
in Sheffield since the 1980s. Much<br>of his current practice is
based around using spam emails as raw<br>material for composition and
performing, including Silicone Bake, a spam<br>and Livecoding
collaboration with Alex McLean. He was a member of<br>electronic funk
band Chakk which is best known for building Sheffield's<br>first
large recording studio, FON Studios, in the mid 1980s, and he
has<br>been one of “freestyle techno” and chill-out pioneers

PULSE ORCHESTRA<br>---------------------<br><br>Sync Pulse
Orchestra<br>A workshop facilitated by Access Space, Sheffield,
UK<br><br>Some times artists are isolated, lonely perhaps, or feel
they need to<br>work on their own exclusively. At Access Space we
believe collaboration<br>is an essential part of artistic
practice.<br><br>The Sync Pulse Orchestra, an electronics and
collaborative performance<br>workshop, is based around the most basic
part of a computer, the CMOS<br>chip
(</font></font><a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/CMOS.html" target="_blank"><font color="#1155cc"><font face="arial, sans-serif">http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/CMOS.html</font></font></a><font color="#222222"><font face="arial, sans-serif">).<br><br>The
workshop is 4-5hrs long and for up to 12 participants. There would<br>be
no soldering involved, so a complete beginner can
participate.<br><br>Participants will build a 6 voice synthesiser and
perform an improvised<br>score at the end of the workshop. The synths
are synced together so that<br>participants collaborate in
performance regardless of whether they want<br>to or not! And they
will learn to create a whole from listening to each<br>other.<br><br>We
will bring specially created CMOS synth kits with heart-shaped
Sync<br>Pulse Orchestra logos and laser cut heart-shaped badges for
participants<br>to show they have experienced the joy of performing
with others. Sync<br>Pulse synths will be free for participants to
take away with them.<br><br>_<br><br>Workshop leader – John X.
Moseley<br>John is a tinkerer, musician and engineer, a creator of
strange and<br>wonderful electronic objects and music making gadgets.
He is the<br>inventor of ArtBot, an autonomous, free roaming robot
which paints<br>pictures in an abstract style. John created ArtBot
because he wanted to<br>submit work to an exhibition by didn't think
of himself as a<br>painter...so he invented one. ArtBot's first work
was exhibited at 20x20<br>2009 in Sheffield. John helped set up and
now manages Refab Space,<br>Access Space's DIY FabLab. His music can

lyrique,<br>Mal au Pixel and the Pixelache network propose a series
of monthly<br>meetings in Paris, until April 2015, consisting in a
public talk and a<br>hands-on workshop. Since 2006, Mal au Pixel
festival is looking at<br>connecting technology, urban electronics
and social transformation<br>issues, and to investigate our
contemporary beliefs. The festival<br>brings together young
