The contemporary city exists in a haze of code and is characterised
by extensive sensor networks, formal and informal, that capture all
aspects of urban life as data. The city as data-space is subject to
regimes of algorithmic governance that evade public scrutiny even as
they produce the space of the city in a Lefebvrian sense. This call
asks how critical new media art practices and interdisciplinary
collaborations, that engage with the networked data assemblages of
the emergent smart city, can serve to make legible the opaque
algorithmic processes of can be termed the data-city. Can novel
methodologies for critical engagement with this data-city be
developed and what insights will they offer into new forms of
publicness contingent on these networked data assemblages.

<p class="" style="margin-bottom:0.35cm;line-height:115%" lang="en-GB">
This call seeks proposals that explore interdisciplinary and
collaborative responses to these issues coming from practice-based
artistic research, new media and sound art practices, contemporary
art, urban studies, code studies, and interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary permutations of the above. It is envisaged that
responses could be aesthetic, technical, activist or theoretical in
nature or interdisciplinary combinations of the above.</p>
