<p><font >Die slowenische
Künstlerin <b>Špela Petric</b> nähert sich ihrer Kunstproduktion über die Hybrid
Arts und die Biochemie, worin sie promoviert hat. Diese beiden
erkenntnistheoretischen Ansätze prägen ihre Arbeit mit dem Pflanzenreich im
Sinne einer zwischenartlichen Kollaboration. Sie untersucht Ontologien,
Methodologien, Ethik und Praktiken der Pflege, die unserer Beziehungen mit
Pflanzen zugrunde liegen. Ihre erste Einzelausstellung in Berlin wird einen
Einblick in ihre Multi-Species-Projekte geben.<br><br></font><font >Das Pflanzenreich, auf das wir für
unser Überleben angewiesen sind, funktioniert auf einer völlig anderen
biologischen Grundlage als unsere: scheinbar untätig, buchstäblich vegetativ und
ausgestattet mit vielen noch unerforschten Formen der Intelligenz. Doch die
Wissenschaft offenbart eine komplizierte Welt schwer nachvollziehbarer
chemischer Konversationen, zwischenartlicher Netzwerke und nicht zentralisierter
Operationen, die unserer eigenen Existenz fremd sind. Mit ihrer Arbeit schlägt
Petric neuartige Formen der Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Pflanzen,
gegenseitiger Erkenntnisse und Ansätze eines möglichen Austauschs
vor.<br><br></font><font >Ihre Serie 'Confronting Vegetal Otherness' ist eine
performative Auseinandersetzung über eben solche neuen Formen des Austauschs. Im
Zentrum ihrer Arbeit <em>Skotopoiesis</em> (was mit "von
Dunkelheit geformt" übersetzet werden kann) steht ein biosemiotischer Prozess
zur Interkognition zwischen der Künstlerin und einem Kressefeld. In einer
Langzeit-Performance steht die Künstlerin lange vor dem Feld, ihr Schatten trägt
zu einem Verblassen und einer Dehnung der Kresse bei und der Körper der
Künstlerin schrumpft minimal. Der zeitliche Aspekt zwingt die Künstlerin dazu,
an einem vegetativen Zeitgefühl zu partizipieren und einen
postanthropozentrischen Zugang zum Nichtmenschlichen
einzunehmen.<br><i><br>Strange Encounters: Metaphysics, Algae and
Carcinoma</i> nutzt Biotechnologie, um unsere Unterschiede mit dem
Pflanzenreich zu überwinden. Hier schaut die Künstlerin mit einem
naturwissenschaftlichen Blick auf die Zellbiologie und verfolgt den Ansatz, die
Zelle als biotechnische Arbeitskraft zu verstehen. Petric inszeniert eine
In-vitro-Begegnung von zwei Arten von Zellen: <i>Chlorella</i>, eine frei
lebende einzellige photosynthetische Alge und eine menschliche Krebszelle, das
Karzinom einer Blase. "Ich mache Biopolitik, wähle, instrumentiere, beobachte,
dokumentiere, erzähle", bemerkt Petric. "Der Krebs und die Algen verhandeln den
Raum, den ich ihnen gebe. Die Macht der Biologie dringt genauso in die Pflanze
ein, wie es der Mensch tut.<br><br></font><font >"Die Arbeit <i>The Plant Sex
Consultancy</i>, die Petric zusammen mit Pei Ying Lin, Dimitris Stamatis und
Jasmina Weiss produziert hat, schlägt designbasierte Lösungen für sexuelle (oder
Bestäubungs-)Probleme von sechs Pflanzen vor. Angesiedelt zwischen
Medizinprodukten und Sexspielzeuge für Blumen, sprechen die vorgeschlagenen
Designlösungen unsere Fantasie an und fordern unsere vorgefassten Vorstellungen
von pflanzlicher Handlungs- und Empfindungsfähigkeit heraus. Sie beziehen sich
auch auf eine mögliche Zukunft, in der ein Mangel an bestäubenden Insekten
drastische technologische Eingriffe erfordert. Eine aktuelle Studie zeigte, dass
die Insektenpopulationen in deutschen Naturschutzgebieten während der letzten 30

<b><font >Špela Petric</font></b></font><font >
approaches art production with a background in Hybrid Arts as well as a PhD in
Biochemistry. These dual epistemological approaches inform her work with the
Plant Kingdom as part of a multi-species collaboration exploring the ontologies,
methodologies, ethics and practices of care involved in our relationship to the
vegetal. Her first solo show in Berlin will give an insight into her
multi-species endeavour.<br><br></font><font ><font >The green
kingdom, upon which we depend for our very survival, functions on a radically
different biological basis from us: seemingly inert, literally vegetative and
endowed with unexplored forms of intelligence. Yet science reveals an intricate
world of mysterious chemical conversations, interspecies networks and
non-centralised operations alien from our own existence. Through her work Petric
proposes novel modes of human-plant communication, intercognition and
exchange.<br><br>Her series 'Confronting Vegetal Otherness' is a performative
exploration of such an exchange.</font> <i><font
>Skotopoiesis</font></i></font><font ><font > (meaning
‘shaped by darkness’) proposes a biosemiotic process for intercognition between
the artist and a field of cress. In a durational performance the artist stands
before the field, her shadow obstructing light, contributing to a paling and
lengthening in the cress, while resulting in a minute shrinking of the artist.
The durational aspect forces the artist to take part in a vegetative sense of
time, forcing a post-anthropocentric approach towards the
nonhuman.<br><br></font><i><font >Strange Encounters: Metaphysics, Algae
and Carcinoma</font></i><font > uses biotechnology to overcome our
difference(s) from the plant kingdom. Taking a scientific view of being at the
cellular level, as well as the cell as biotechnical labour force, Petric
arranges the</font> <i><font >in vitro</font></i><font > encounter
of two types of cells:</font> <i><font >Chlorella</font></i></font><font
><font >, a free living single-celled photosynthetic algae and
a human cancer cell, carcinoma of the bladder. "I am performing biopolitics,
selecting, orchestrating, monitoring, documenting, narrating” remarks Petric.
“The cancer and the algae negotiate the space I allow for them. Biopower
penetrates the plant just as it does the human."<br><br></font><font >A
further work,</font> <i><font >The Plant Sex
Consultancy</font></i></font><font ><font >, produced along
with Pei Ying Lin, Dimitris Stamatis and Jasmina Weiss, proposes design-based
solutions to the sexual (or pollination) problems of six plants. Somewhere
between medical devices and floral sex toys, the design solutions engage our
imaginations, challenging our preconceptions of vegetal agency and sentience.
They also refer to a possible future where a dearth of pollinating insects
necessitates drastic technological interventions. A recent study showed that
over the last 30 years insect populations in German nature reserves have
plummeted by more than 75%.<br></font><font >-Regine Rapp &
