9 evenings reconsidered: art, theatre, and engineering, 1966

new york, oktober 1966: neun abende in der 69th regiment armory hall markieren die geburtsstunde der interaktiven performance. erstmals begegneten sich künstler und ingenieure in einem kreativen prozess. beteiligt hatten sich inzwischen hochrenommierte künstler wie robert rauschenberg, john cage, lucinda childs und deborah hay, steve paxton und yvonne rainer. der initiator dieses projektes war der für die bell telephone laboratories in murray hill, new jersey tätige elektronik-ingenieur billy klüver, der bereits in anderen zusammenhängen künstler hinzugezogen hatte, wenn es um die lösung technischer probleme ging. im vorfeld der "9 evenings" wollte er den anderen weg gehen: die idee war, dass diesmal die ingenieure die künstler unterstützen sollten, ihre vorstellungen umzusetzen.
40 jahre ist es her, dass die "9 evenings" in new york stattgefunden haben. die von catherine morris kuratierte ausstellung "9 evenings reconsidered: art, theatre, and engineering, 1966" wurde 2006 am mit - massachusetts institute of technology präsentiert und ist nun zum ersten mal in europa zu sehen.

während der letzten zwei stunden der ausstellung 9 evenings im kubus wird parallel im klub eine finissage-lounge mit musik aus dem jahr 1966 zu erleben sein...

9 evenings reconsidered: art, theatre, and engineering, 1966

new york, october, 1966: nine evenings in the 69th regiment armory hall mark the beginning of interactive performance. for the first time, artists and engineers come together in a creative process. participants include renowned artists such as robert rauschenberg, john cage, lucinda childs and deborah hay, steve paxton and yvonne rainer. the initiator of the project was billy klüver, an electronics engineer at bell labs in murray hill, new jersey. he was accustomed to consulting artists in other situations, enlisting their help to solve technical problems. for the "9 evenings", he sought a different path: this time, engineers would help artists to realize their concepts.
forty years have passed since the "9 evenings" in new york. the exhibition "9 evenings reconsidered: art, theatre, and engineering, 1966", curated by catherine morris, was presented at mit - massachusetts institute of technology and is now being shown for the first time in europe.
