NISO Committee AX on OpenURL standardization is seeking participants for a
trial of the emerging OpenURL 1.0 standard. The official trial period will
begin May 1, 2003 and end November 1, 2003.

Participants are sought from these three categories of OpenURL users:

- Data providers who are constructing OpenURLs from their metadata
- Vendors and providers of OpenURL resolver services
- Libraries providing end-user services based on OpenURL resolution

Trial participants will be asked to select a minimum level of conformance
to the draft standard for trial use, to provide interoperability with other
participants, and to share their findings with the NISO AX committee and
others interested in OpenURL development. More information on the trial
period is available at
http://library.caltech.edu/openurl/PubComDocs/Announce/20030415-Announce-Trial.htm.

The trial period will make use of the San Antonio Profile, an OpenURL
profile developed for the scholarly information community. The draft
standard, in two parts, is available on the NISO AX website at
http://library.caltech.edu/openurl/Public_Comments.htm. With this
announcement, we are also releasing the implementation guidelines for the
San Antonio Profile. The OpenURL registry (at http://openurl.info/registry)
defines the minimum necessary transports, identifiers, and metadata formats
to implement OpenURLs of this profile.

To become a participant, please subscribe to the OpenURL listserv (if you
are not already a member) by sending an email message to
majordomo at caltech.edu with the message "subscribe openurl" (without
quotes). We ask each participant then to supply the following information
in a posting to that list:

name of organization: type of organization (data provider/OpenURL resolver
service/library) contact person: contact person's mailing address, email
and phone number:

After a brief discussion period participants will be asked to estimate what
level of conformance they will endeavor to provide during the trial period.

For Committee AX,
--Eric Van de Velde.
