VIPER BASEL Internationales Festival für Film Video und neue Medien findet
von Donnerstag, 18. bis Montag, 22. November 2004 zum fünften Mal in Basel
statt. Das Festival präsentiert mit einem umfangreichen Film/Video- und
Ausstellungsprogramm, einer Konferenz, Workshops, Performances und
zahlreichen Premieren und Events einen aktuellen Überblick von
schweizerischen und internationalen Positionen zu Kunst und neuen Medien.
VIPER präsentiert die besten 133 Arbeiten aus dem Internationalen
Wettbewerb. Vertreten sind auch Projekte renommierter internationaler Kunst-
und Research Labs, wie dem MIT Media Lab Europe in Dublin, Interaction
Design at the Royal College of Art, London, MonteVideo Netherlands Media Art
Institute, Amsterdam, Eyebeam Atelier/New York u.a. Zahlreiche Arbeiten und
Projekte werden erstmals in der Schweiz zu sehen sein.

2_VIPER CONFERENCE
Unter dem Motto GENERATIONS ON THE MOVE veranstaltet VIPER Basel eine
internationale Konferenz.
Drei Themenfelder werden fokussiert:
PERFORMING TO SURVIVE - stellt die Austattung der Lebenswelt mit digitalen
intelligenten Technologien in den Vordergrund. Der Einzelne und die
Gesellschaft werden zu Playern im System - Lifestyle oder eine subtile
Ökonomie der Kontrolle?
TESTING THE CULTURAL AFFAIR - fragt nach kultureller Orientierung und Aktion
in einer global vernetzten Welt - Authentizität im digitalen Zeitalter oder
multipler Konsumismus?
PROBING CITIZENS WAKE - stellt neue Modelle sogenannter «governance» vor.
Sie stehen für die Hoffnung auf eine selbstbestimmte Konstitution
postindustrieller wissensbasierter Gesellschaften - transnationale Utopie
oder clevere Interessensvertretung?

Die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Film und Kunst sind unübersehbar und seit dem
Siegeszug der digitalen Technologien ein spannendes Feld künstlerischer
Praxis. VIPER BASEL 2004 präsentiert ein Retrospektive des englischen
Künstlers und Filmemachers Isaac Julien.

Ganze Industrien, Forschungs- und Designabteilungen arbeiten an der
Entwicklung von 'smart tools'und 'intelligent ambients'. VIPER BASEL stellt

Eine Kreuzung aus Fernseh- und Webprojekt, eine Plattform im Internet, die
sich selbst als die Geschichte eines Fernsehsenders erzählt. Der Sender
arbeitet mit den Lowtech- und Finanzmitteln der Netzkunst und hat
Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen in vier Kontinenten.

VIPER Basel International Festival for Film Video and New Media will be
running between Thursday, 18 November and Monday, 22 November 2004. The
festival will present an extensive film/video and exhibition programme, a
conference, workshops, performances and numerous premiers and events and
offers an up-to-date overview over Swiss and international positions in art
and new media.
VIPER presents the best 133 works from the International Competition.
Projects from renowned international art and research labs like the MIT
Media Lab Europe/ Dublin, Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art/
London, MonteVideo Netherlands Media Institute/ Amsterdam, Eyebeam
Atelier/New York and others.

1_VIPER CONFERENCE
Under the motto GENERATIONS ON THE MOVE VIPER is presenting an international
Conference.
Three subject areas will be up for discussion:
PERFORMING TO SURVIVE focuses on equipping the world we live in with digital
intelligent technologies. Individuals and collectives become players in the
system - lifestyle or a subtle economy of control?
TESTING THE CULTURAL AFFAIR enquires about cultural orientation and action
in a globally networked world - authenticity in the digital age or multiple
consumerism?
PROBING CITIZENS WAKE introduces new so-called «governance» models. They
stand for our hope of a self-determined constitution for post-industrial,
knowledge-based societies - trans-national utopia or cleverly presented
self-interest?

It is impossible to ignore interactions between film and art, and since
digital technologies have swept all before them this has been an
increasingly exciting area of artistic action. VIPER BASEL 2004 presents a
retrospective of the English artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien.

tells itself as the story of a television station. The station works with
the low-tech and financial resources of Net art and has employees on four
continents.

the festival to an open seminar: students and visitors discuss selected
works of the VIPER Exhibition with a focus on the topic «Aesthetics of
Projection».
