Described by 'Chicago Reader' as "one of the most gifted and
innovative guitarists of the decade," Portuguese Rafael Toral is
above all renowned for minimalist, almost sacral guitar compositions
that stretch the limits of resonance and acoustic perception and
comprehension. Since 2003 Toral has taken his work in a completely
new direction, evinced to date by two releases: the solo album, Space
on the Staubgold label and the CD, The Tone Gardens, recorded with
the Sei Miguel Quartet. These two albums are the result of what
Rafael Toral calls his 'Space Program.' Using electronic instruments
of his own design, Toral creates his personal vision of contemporary
Jazz. Central elements of this are interaction with sensor-interfaces
– a means for Toral to physically interact in innovative fashion with
his music – and silences as a means of shaping the space in which his
sounds are produced. His instruments appear to be radically simple,
yet, Toral succeeds in drawing from them extremely complex and
challenging music. This is music that focuses on essentials, on
primary aural elements: on the length or brevity of a tone, for
example. It is live music in the widest possible sense, performance
music that is neither composed nor improvised but rather, an
extremely disciplined and structured form of decision-making in real
time. Rafael Toral's concerts with the Sei Miguel Quartet (percussion
and trumpet) are characterized by a high degree of musical
attentiveness, both on stage and on the part of the audience.

The program, „Crossings“ is dedicated to encounters and
collaborations between musicians from the Middle East and Western
Europe or America. Trio A – comprising trumpeter and cartoonist Mazen
Kerbaj, guitarist Sharif Senahoui and bassist/electronic musician
Raed Yassin, is the oldest and most-renowned project of the still
young Beirut/ Lebanon scene for free improvised music. Since seven
years they organize the Middle East's largest festival for
experimental music, Irtijal, as well as take care of the Lebanon's
only label for contemporary avant-garde music, Al Maslakh
("Slaughterhouse").
The trio Nettle consists of American DJ/Rupture (electronics), Briton
Jen Jones (cello) and Moroccoan Abdel Hak (violin, banjo). Their
music reflects the three musicians' origins, combining urban beats,
abstract Electronics and traditional-sounding melodies of North
Africa, Europe and Brooklyn.
Point of departure of a performance conceived specifically for this
evening by Dutch-German sound experimentalists, Staalplaatsoundsystem
in collaboration with electronic musician, Tarek Atoui from Beirut is
an as yet unpublished tape by the 1999 prematurely deceased British
musician Muslimgauze aka Bryn Jones. His legacy was an archive of
master-tapes: unpublished recordings that the labels, Staalplaat and
Soleilmoon have taken upon themself to publish (with 90 releases
since 1999). Jones’ interest for Arabian culture, evinced by his
music, and his unambiguous, consistent and unaffected political
support of Palestinans' struggle for an independent national state,
was and continues to be controversial. Born in Manchester, Jones
never traveled to the Middle East, refusing to go as a tourist to an
occupied country. Thus, in his own way, Jones mirrors aspects of the
Orientalism that is so widespread in Europe. Interviewed about the
possible repercussions of his music in Arabic countries, he replied:
"None. There are none at all. But nor do we expect any. That is
unimportant." He was however, mistaken. Although his music was never
available for sale in Arabic lands, thanks to Internet and MP3, it is
today a significant reference for many Arabic experimental musicians.

The Buddha Machine is a rectangular plastic box equipped with a
speaker, poor circuitry and nine pre-recorded loops of varying length
and levels of degradation (due to manufacturing imperfections). Made
in China by Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian (aka fm3), it was
modeled on a machine used in Buddhist Temples to assist prayer – the
same factories are used to manufacture both the prayer machines and
the Buddha machine – and became a runaway success, treasured by
friends and admirers around the world.
The friends and admirers have now gathered to express their
appreciation for the loop player. First there was Robert Henke, with
his beautiful elaboration „Layering Buddha“ (Imbalance 2006). Then
there was Jukebox Buddha (Staubgold, 2006), a remix/tribute album
with contributions from esteemed fans including Wang Fan, Adrian
Sherwood, Thomas Fehlmann, Gudrun Gut, Blixa Bargeld, Jan Jelinek,
Sunn O))) and Sun City Girls, and now, CTM gathers some of the key
acolytes as well as the creators, fm3, for an expedition into the
ambient world of Buddha loops.

[5] NEW SOUND FILES ON SAMURAI.FM
Like in the previous year, Samurai.fm, one of the most active and
popular radio stations for electronic music on the net, is a media
partner of CTM. The samurai.fm website features a growing profile of
CTM, with dj- and live-sets by artists that played the festival and
with live-recordings from its 2006 edition. From tomorrow on
Samurai.fm will host new audio files by Rechenzentrum, Dev/Null and
Jason Forrest to give you a first impression of what to expect at CTM.
07. Later, in mid February, a number of live recordings will document
the 2007 edition of the festival.

"Emperor Remixed" - Beethoven's fifth piano concert reinterpreted by
Rechenzentrum (electronics, video) and Ueli Wiget of Ensemble Modern
(piano).
The Berlin av-project Rechenzentrum (Marc Weiser: sound / Lillevan:
video) and Frankfurt-am-Main-based pianist Ueli Wiget (Ensemble
Modern, etc.) perform Beethoven's fifth piano concerto, opus 73:
Rechenzentrum takes over the role of the orchestra, and the pianist
plays the solo parts. After the world première, which took place in
Japan in 2006, tesla starts its 2007 season with the European
premiere of this extraordinary experiment.

Vom Chicago Reader als „one of the most gifted and innovative
guitarists of the decade“ beschrieben, ist der Portugiese Rafael
Toral vor allem für minimalistische, sakral anmutende Gitarren-
Kompositionen bekannt, die Grenzen von Resonanz, akustischer
Wahrnehmung und Hörverständnis ausloten. Seit dem Jahr 2003 hat Toral
seiner Arbeit jedoch eine völlig neue Richtung eröffnet, die in
bisher zwei Veröffentlichungen dokumentiert ist: dem Solo-Album Space
auf Staubgold und der CD The Tone Gardens zusammen mit dem Sei Miguel
Quartet. Diese zwei Alben sind das Ergebnis, dessen was Rafael Toral
sein „Space Program“ nennt. Mittels selbst entwickelter
elektronischer Instrumente entwirft Toral darin seine persönliche
Vision eines zeitgenössischen Jazz. Zentrale Elemente sind die
Interaktion mit Sensor-Interfaces, die es Toral auf neue Weise
ermöglichen, seinen Körper in das Spielen von Musik einzubeziehen,
sowie Stille, als Ausformung des die Klänge umgebenden Raumes. Seine
Instrumente scheinen radikal simpel und doch schafft es Toral darauf,
extrem komplexe und fordernde Musik zu entwerfen. Es ist eine Musik,
die sich ganz auf das Wesentliche, auf die primären klanglichen
Elemente – auf die Länge oder Kürze eines Klanges beispielsweise –
konzentriert. Es ist durch und durch Live-Musik, Performance-Musik,
nicht komponiert und nicht improvisiert, aber eine extrem
disziplinierte und strukturierte Form der Entscheidungsfindung in
Echtzeit. Konzerte von Rafael Toral mit dem Sei Miguel Quartet
(Percussion und Trompete) sind Ereignisse höchster musikalischer
Aufmerksamkeit – auf der Bühne wie beim Publikum.

Das Programm Crossings ist der Begegnung und Zusammenarbeit von
Musikern aus dem Nahem Osten und West-Europa bzw. den USA gewidmet.
Das Trio A – bestehend aus Trompeter und Comic-Künstler Mazen Kerbaj,
Gitarrist Sharif Senahoui und dem Bassisten/Elektronik-Musiker Raed
Yassin – ist das älteste und bekannteste Projekt der noch jungen
Szene für freie improvisierte Musik in Beirut und dem Libanon. Seit
sieben Jahren organisieren sie das größte Festival für experimentelle
Musik im Nahen Osten, Irtijal, und betreuen Libanons einziges Label
für zeitgenössiche Avantgarde Musik Al Maslakh (Schlachthaus).
Das Trio Nettle besteht aus DJ/Rupture (US, Elektronik), Jen Jones
(Schottland, Cello) und Abdel Hak (Maroko, Violine, Banjo). Ihre
Musik spiegelt die geographischen Hintergründe der drei Musiker wider
und verbindet Klänge Nord-Afrikas, Europas und Brooklyns in einer
Mischung aus urbanen Beats, abstrakter Elektronik und traditionellen
Melodieläufen.
Ausgangspunkt der Performance des niederländisch-deutschen
Staalplaatsoundsystem zusammen mit dem Elektronikmusiker Tarek Atoui
aus Beirut ist ein noch unveröffentlichtes Tape des 1999 viel zu früh
verstorbenen britischen Musikers Muslimgauze. Bryn Jones aka
Muslimgauze hinterließ ein Archiv mit Master-Bändern, deren
Veröffentlichung sich die Label Staalplaat und Soleilmoon zur Aufgabe
gemacht haben (seit 1999 ca 90 Tonträger). Das in der Musik von Jones
dokumentierte Interesse für die Arabische Kultur und seine politische
Haltung, die einseitig, aber konsequent und ohne Verstellung, den
palästinensischen Kampf um den eigenen Staat unterstützte, wurde und
wird kontrovers diskutiert. Der in Manchester geborene Jones reiste
nie nach Palästina und den Nahen Osten, da er es ablehnte, als
Tourist in ein besetztes Land zu fahren. Auf seine eigene Weise
spiegelt Muslimgauze so Aspekte des im Westen weit verbreiteten
Orientalismus wider. Auf die Frage nach der Resonanz seiner Musik in
den arabischen Ländern antwortete er in einem Interview: "Null.
Keine. Aber, wir erwarten auch keine. Das ist nicht wichtig." Damit
hatte er sich geirrt. Obwohl seine in Kleinstauflagen produzierten
Tonträger in den arabischen Ländern nie käuflich zu erwerben waren,
ist er heute – dank Internet und MP3 – für viele Arabische
Experimental-Musiker ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt.

Die Buddha-Machine ist eine rechteckige Plastikbox, ausgestattet mit
einem Lautsprecher, billigen Schaltkreisen und neun Loops von
variierender Länge und (aufgrund von Herstellungsmängeln) von
unterschiedlicher klanglicher Qualität. Einem für die Gebetspraxis
buddhistischer Mönche entworfenen Gerät nachempfunden, lassen
Christan Virant und Zhang Jian (aka fm3) ihre Buddha Machines in der
gleichen chinesischen Fabrik wie ihr Vorbild herstellen – mit
ungeahntem Erfolg sowie weltweit Freunden und Sammlern, die ihre
Bewunderung für den Loop-Player zum Ausdruck bringen. Der erste war
Robert Henke mit seiner ausnahmslos schönen Arbeit “Layering
Buddha” (Imbalace 2006). Staubgold folgte im selben Jahr mit der
Remix-Tribute-Compilation “Jukebox Buddha” mit Beiträgen von
hochgeschätzen Fans wie Wang Fan, Adrian Sherwood, Thomas Fehlmann,
Gudrun Gut, Blixa Bargeld, Jan Jelinek, Sunn O))) und den Sun City
Girls. An diesem Abend kommen nun einige der Anhänger der Buddha
Machine mit ihren Erfindern fm3 zusammen, um sich auf eine Expedition
in die atmosphärischen Welten der Buddha-Loops zu begeben.
