*Exhibition "Gameworld" 30.3. - 30.9.2007, Opening 30.3.2007

*
Gameworld explores video games as an art form and presents contemporary
art related to video games. Via these dual lines of investigation, the
exhibition explores video and computer games as entertainment, art form,
agent of innovation, and cultural force.

Gameworld is conceptualized as two hemispheres, one focusing on internal
considerations (game history and design) and the other on external
considerations (how games are shaping culture), linked via a third,
intermediate, section devoted to alternative games and current games
research.

The exhibition will:

    * encourage public awareness of the varying types of video games,
and of what constitutes good/quality game design
    * deepen the public understanding of games' role in contemporary
culture beyond simple either/or distinctions (good or bad, etc.)
    * illustrate how games are influencing other forms of media, art,
      and design.
    * explore and observe the real-world, physical and social
      environments of video gameplay
    * probe how the virtual environments of video games are blending
with and bleeding into our physical world.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an events program that includes
professional workshops and seminars, musical performances, a recurring
"LAN Party," and a "big game" .

      *About Laboral*

*Laboral Art and Industrial Creation Centre* is an exhibition centre for
art, science, technology and advanced visual industries. But it is also
a venue for artistic and technological production, research and
training; and for the dissemination of new forms of art and industrial
creation. To fulfil these goals, laboral will be *a space for exchange
between different art disciplines*; a multidisciplinary and
interdisciplinary centre and a dynamic environment for creators / works
/ researchers / teachers / audiences.

Organically, the centre depends on a non-profit foundation comprising
corporations and institutions, founded expressly to ensure the
intellectual and financial feasibility of the centre. The project was
developed under the auspices of the Government of the Principality of
Asturias, promoter of the conversion of part of the building originally
designed as workshops for the former Gijon vocational training centre.
The refurbishment of the 14338 square metres of functional space for the
centre required an investment in excess of €11 million.

Asturias' industrial tradition and the universal vocation of its people
make this region the perfect location for this unique *space for
artistic exchange* which wishes to forge an alliance of art, industry
and economic growth.
