Dear Friend of the American Academy in Berlin,

Liaquat Ahamed
Allianz Distinguished Visitor, American Academy in Berlin
Investment Manager and Pulitzer Prize-winning Author

Will the Euro Survive?
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 - 6:00 pm

Location: Allianz Forum, Pariser Platz 6, 10117 Berlin

"Economic realities have dominated public perception of the ongoing financial crisis in Europe. However, the historical roots of the crisis reach further into Europe's past: one implicit goal of unifying the continent has always been to control Germany's economic influence. As noted by Thomas Mann, the aim in the aftermath of the Second World War was to create a "European Germany" rather than a "German Europe." Today, however, thanks in part to the effects of a shared currency, the German economy remains a power house in the European Union. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Liaquat Ahamed explores the history of European unity starting in the 1950s, explains the paradoxical interplay between weaker and stronger economies in the Euro zone, and outlines the long-term future of the Euro."
