10 Jahre \\internationaler\medien\kunst\preis

10 years \\international\media\art\award

Naturally you are proud if a project not only proves successful over a
certain period of time but also gains in terms of quality and esteem.
The \\international\media\art\award has been around since 1992 and since
the initial start-up difficulties has emerged as a respectable and
professional competition for media artists worldwide. To mark the
occasion the organizers, SWR in Baden-Baden and the ZKM in Karlsruhe,
would like to present the competition (and needless to say this means
media) to an even greater degree.
As 50 works are nominated and receive awards every year, the archive of
the \\international\media\art\award has now grown to a point where it
holds 500 items, a figure that makes us both proud and apprehensive. How
can we effectively document the large numbers of submissions, the
artistic spectrum that ranges from video to interactive installation?
If the average length of a tape were, say, ten minutes, we would have
over 83 hours of programming - many contributions are longer or simply
interactive and thus infinite.
Media art today is not an exotic innovation as it was at the beginning
of the last decade through to the mid-1990s. Yet, drab TV programming
reigns the day-to-day life of most picture consumers. We thus regard our
task as continuing the path we have set upon, that is in bringing art
into television and thus to people.
An exhibition, a cinema program, a DVD are the vehicles we have chosen
to fulfill this task. Please refer to the detailed information on
individual projects at the website: www.zkm.de/bildercodes or
