The Laboratory Museum of Contemporary Art at "La Sapienza" University in
Rome, ruled by Simonetta Lux, in join with the Art History Department
features for the first time worldwide the work of Finnish artist Marita
Liulia, a pioneer in multimedia who received many international awards. The
show exhibits her recent production: TAROTS, a modern and technological
interpretation of the Tarot game. Tradition and innovation, high-quality
design and a careful observation of the contemporary world melt together
into the 78 cards obtained by digitally manipulating photographs taken by
the artist over years of travels and research. Liulia renewed all the cards
symbols, transforming for example the Fool into the Dreamer. She also
rewrote the responses of each card and suited them to the actual
sensibility.

Liulia created a CD and a web-site where it is possible to question the
cards by interactive tools. Inspired by the technological revolution of our
times, particularly advanced in Finland, where many corporations such as
Nokia and Sonera have been rising and starting a cooperation with artists,
she definitely suited her works to the mobile phone, developing a version
accessible in text format only, or, thanks to the newest multimedia phones,
as images visualized on the phone screen. So far, a new frontier in the
relationship between communication tools and contemporary art is about to
open.

The show presents: on the ground floor a retrospective of the most important
multimedia works by Lulia, such as Ambitious Bitch (Ars Electronica Award,
Linz, 1997) and a link to www.medeia.com, where information and a demo on
the Tarots mobile phone service are available.

On the first floor the striking 78 images of the Tarots are exhibited.

The show is curated by Stella Bottai and Antonella Sbrilli.

The round-table conference: "Art at the time of mobile phones" is scheduled
the same day of the opening, to focus on the relationship between
contemporary art and new communication systems, also including the
development of multimedia formats for cultural contents.

Marita Liulia will be discussing the issue with: Stella Bottai, Antonella
Sbrilli, Simonetta Lux, Edoardo Fleischner (Multimedia Park Torino), Anna
Puccio (SoneraZed Italia), Francesco Lutrario (Ludonet), Valerio Eletti
(Mobilearn), Stefano Buonamico (www.gordo.it), Silvia Bordini, Claudia Cieri
Via, Carla Subrizi ("La Sapienza" University).

The show and the round-table conference are supported by the Finnish Embassy
(www.finland.it), Adnkronos Cultura (www.adnkronos.com), sponsored by Sonera
Zed (www.zed.it), Stora Enso (www.storaenso.com), Diners Club
(www.dinetclub.com). The show will next travel to: Belgium, Sweden and
Japan.
