First presentation of the video loop installation
KYOTO-RAW MATERIAL ON SUBLIME BEAUTY
by WOLF KAHLEN
11 hours 25 minutes loop, 1999/2003
Running from Nov. 29, 2003 till Jan. 31, 2004 continously.
Since the piece is shorter than 12 hours, a da by day progressing delay is
part of the message.

Too many beauties summed up, tend to become unbearable. (W.K.)
Abstract:
The uncut, raw material piece sums up -in the way of a chronological video
diary- how the classical forms of beauty in Japanese daily life like cute
wrappings of shopping items, temple rituals in right angle movements, the
cult of rare shoes, the drawing of sand gardens, tea bowl appreciations, an
exhibition of impermanent works, puppy like school girls as posters,
irritating older men passing by with the sound of hummed songs ... become
pretty hard to digest, while storing more and more of them in your mind. If
they are not now and then 'broken' by - what Kahlen calls -'VIDEO DIRT': the
technical breaking down or setting up of video images in real time or slow
motion. After a first irritation, when the video dirt starts roling, it
develops into events, even stories of another kind of beauty, a technical
one. Which, by the way, is at least in parts a Japanese product too.The
piece is beamed that way, that the viewer becomes just an accidental
passer-by and may stop or continue his way, thus possibly catching a bit or
more of the subliminal message.
