1 /// Wos 3: a success story already
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It's still more than a week away but already a success: the "Wizards
of OS 3" [1] conference. How come?

Because we now know that almost a hundred of the world's most
influential, interesting, creative, and fun people will convene at
the Berliner Congress Center [2] to present their ideas that make the
Digital Commons go 'round.

Yes, the big names will be there: Lessig, Moglen, Tiemann, Love,
Bollier and many more. But that's just half the story. We'll also
show you the projects that rock the Commons boat and haven't had much
publicity so far:

- The Simputer - an alternative PDA from India
- The Classic Amiga Preservation Society (C.A.P.S.) from Budapest
- The SchoolNet Namibia from Windhoek
- The Open Access Journal "Molecules" form Basel/Qingdao, China
- The Jahshaka project from Kingston, Jamaica

and lots more. Be sure to be there.

2 /// let's talk about creativity - and see it at work
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

There'll be a lot of talk about creativity at this conference and how
to preserve free working conditions for artists. But do we get to see
what they do with it? Of course.

Take the "Public Library" for example. For this exhibition, curators
Inke Arns and Florian Cramer have assembled a collection of eight
works by artists and artist collectives providing their ideas of a
free access to information and knowledge[3]. Find it at the upper
foyer of the Congress Center.

Movie director Michael Grob will present his "CH7" film, a black
satire on the system of private television. With the project, the
makers of "CH7" want to set a counter-point to the copyright hysteria
rampant today. On its first day in the cinema, they released it on
the movie's webpage under a Creative Commons License. Feel free to
share! [4]

3 /// discuss all day. party all night.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

You've had it? Your head's spinning from countless (fascinating)
presentations? Time to kick in a different gear entirely - time to
party!

DJ Bjoern Hartmann from Paris will spin the turntables (and his
PowerMac hard disk) to present his Dub and house-inspired advanced
electronic music. Which is - of course! - fully Creative Commons
compliant [5].

The c-base will bring to you the "Wizards of OS Lounge" on Friday
night, and on Saturday, you're invited to the legendary WMF club's
summer camp at their new, so far undisclosed location in the heart of
Berlin (yes, we're very curious, too). Details will be available soon
at

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
4 /// and don't forget the workshops
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

On top of all panel discussions, you can join in at one of the eleven
two-hour workshops [6], topics ranging from Free Software in Schools
to Alternative Compensation Systems. And on Sunday, we'll be happy to
welcome you at one of these day-long workshops:

- Where next for copyright in Europe?
	http://wizards-of-os.org/index.php?id=921&L=3
- Free (Wireless) Networks
	http://wizards-of-os.org/index.php?id=1386&L=3
- Wikipedia Community Day
	http://wizards-of-os.org/index.php?id=1387&L=3
- European / North American WSIS Activists Meeting Berlin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
5 /// online registration: hurry up!
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Online registration [7] is still available - please hurry up if you'd
like to take advantage of it: we need to confirm your transaction
before June 9. But don't worry if you're one of those slobs who can't
manage to get things done on time: We're going to sell tickets at the
Wos counter on all three conference days. Lucky you.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

So much for now. Please direct your remarks, criticism and other
requests concerning this newsletter to Matthias Spielkamp
(mailto:m.spielkamp at wizards-of-os.org).

"Wir sehen uns in Berlin!"
See you in Berlin!
