»Young Planners and Urban Redevelopment Culture: 
Training and Practical Requirements«
=================================================================

In conjunction with the Initiative for Architecture and Building 
Culture a nationwide competition of ideas entitled Tatort Stadt 
was organised in which young planners submitted their designs 
for urban redevelopment projects in nine cities in western and 
eastern Germany. Since April of this year an exhibition on the 
outcome of the competition (together with an exhibition featuring 
the results of the international Europan 7 competition) has been 
staged in each of the nine cities involved, where it has been 
accompanied by a series of events aimed at stimulating public 
debate on urban redevelopment at the respective locations. The 
results of the discussions and the contributions made by experts 
and those involved in and affected by urban redevelopment have 
been documented and will be presented and discussed at a one-day 
concluding conference in Dessau on 14 October 2004 entitled Young 
Planners and Urban Redevelopment Culture: Training and Practical 
Requirements. Entrants in the Tatort Stadt and Europan 7 
competitions will be joined by practitioners, teachers and 
politicians in discussing the role of planning in urban 
redevelopment. What are the prospects for an ‘urban redevelopment 
culture’ in the light of local experience, the competition that 
was organised and the events that were staged? What skills do 
young planners in particular – architects, engineers, town 
planners, etc. – need to help shape an ‘urban redevelopment 
culture’? In what way can – and must – those responsible for the 
education and training of planners respond? The ideas produced on 
urban redevelopment and the fostering of young planners are 
intended to make a further important contribution on the road to 
an ‘urban redevelopment culture’.

»Junge Planer und Stadtumbaukultur: 
Qualifizierung und Praxisanforderungen«
=================================================================

Im bundesweiten Ideenwettbewerb »Tatort Stadt« haben junge Planer 
im Rahmen der Initiative Architektur und Baukultur Lösungs-
vorschläge für aktuelle Stadtumbauprojekte in neun Städten West- 
und Ostdeutschlands entwickelt. Seit April reist die Ausstellung 
der Wettbewerbsergebnisse (gemeinsam mit der Ausstellung der 
Ergebnisse des internationalen Europan 7 Wettbewerbs) durch diese 
neun »Tatorte«, begleitet von einer Veranstaltungsreihe, die eine 
öffentliche Diskussion über Stadtumbau vor Ort gefördert hat. Die 
Ergebnisse dieser Diskussionen, die Beiträge von Experten, 
Betroffenen und am Stadtumbau Beteiligten wurden dokumentiert und 
werden am 14.Oktober 2004 auf einer ganztägigen Abschlusskonfe-
renz in Dessau unter dem Motto »Junge Planer und Stadtumbaukultur: 
Qualifizierung und Praxisanforderungen« vorgestellt und 
diskutiert. Akteure der »Tatort«- und Europan-Wettbewerbe, 
Vertreter aus Praxis, Lehre und Politik sprechen über die Rolle 
der Planung im Stadtumbau. Welche Perspektiven für eine 
»Stadtumbaukultur« lassen sich aus den Erfahrungen vor Ort, dem 
Wettbewerb und der Gesprächsreihe ableiten? Gibt es international 
vergleichbare Erfahrungen? Welche Fähigkeiten müssen insbesondere 
junge Planer – Architekten, Ingenieure, Stadtplaner usw. – 
mitbringen, um »Stadtumbaukultur« mitzugestalten? Wie kann und 
muss die Qualifizierung, Ausbildung und Weiterbildung der Planer 
reagieren? Die entwickelten Ideen zur Gestaltung des Stadtumbaus 
und zur Förderung junger Planer sollen einen weiteren Baustein 
auf dem Weg zu einer »Stadtumbaukultur« bilden.
