DEAN, FACULTY OF DESIGN

The Dean is responsible for the academic leadership, development and 
supervision of the Faculty of Design.  Working collaboratively and in 
close consultation with the Deans of the Faculties of Art and Liberal 
Studies and reporting to the Vice-President, Academic, the Dean will 
promote effective leadership of the University's academic programs, 
support its educational goals, and enrich University life.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

<	In consultation with Faculty of Design faculty, Assistant 
Deans, other Deans, and the Vice-President Academic, provide 
curricular leadership in the Faculty of Design and related course 
offerings across the University, as well as on such 
curriculum-related matters as equipment & faculty needs, academic 
standards, literacy and student learning, equity issues, degree and 
diploma requirements, and articulation agreements
<	In consultation with the other Deans, recommend to the 
Vice-President, Academic and Academic Council teaching schedules and 
staffing needs
<	Consult broadly within the University with administration, 
faculty, and staff, and outside the University with other 
institutional deans and directors, and with government officials on a 
variety of issues including educational policy development, 
articulation agreements, and exchange agreements
<	Maintain an active role in the creative community relating to 
area of responsibility (such as participation in professional 
associations), and effectively represent externally both the Faculty 
and the University
<	Direct day-to-day operations of all aspects of the Faculty of 
Design including curriculum, classroom & studio facilities, teaching 
and learning resources, as well as Assistant Deans, office staff and 
faculty
<	Working with Vice-President Academic and Director, 
Registrarial & Student Services, ensure the provision of appropriate 
student advising
<	Supervise faculty and support staff, and chair faculty 
meetings to ensure effective communication
<	Oversee faculty evaluation and conduct faculty peer 
evaluation process for tenure and promotion of rank
<	Take a constructive role in course evaluation in conjunction 
with the Vice-President, Academic
<	Meet with support staff on a regular basis to provide 
feedback and consultation on their responsibilities and take a 
constructive role in their performance evaluation
<	Oversee the development, execution, and communication of 
University policies as they pertain to the faculty, staff and students
<	Work collaboratively with other Deans and managers to ensure 
effective planning and resource management of the University, and to 
promote effective University-wide communication
<	Oversee the Faculty of Design planning and prepare the annual 
budget for the area in consultation with the Vice-President, 
Administration, Vice-President, Academic and the Director of Finance
<	Participate as required by the President in collective 
bargaining processes for the University and assist the University in 
the implementation of the University/Faculty Association Memorandum 
of Agreement
<	Prepare reports for the President, Academic Council and its 
sub-committees, and the Board of Governors, as required
<	Collaborate and communicate with the offices of the 
President, Development and Communications on public relations and 
fundraising matters
<	Perform other related duties as assigned
        
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

<	Initial appointment will be for a term of five years, with 
the possibility of renewal.  This position is full-time and may 
include a teaching load of up to 2 courses per academic year.  
Following the successful completion of a decanal appointment, there 
is the guarantee of a full-time tenured teaching position within the 
University.

QUALIFICATIONS:

<	Minimum, Masters degree in Design, or equivalent
<	A minimum of five years' teaching with academic 
administrative experience in post-secondary education and a 
significant record of professional activity in design
<	Familiarity with current issues in design, art and education, 
with a particular sensitivity to the needs of students
<	Proven track record of strong educational leadership, 
curricular development and administrative experience
<	Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the 
ability to facilitate consensus
<	Proven initiative and ability to fundraise and establish 
professional connections within academic and design communities
<	Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills
