PRESS RELEASE

SWEET TABOOS / (EPISODE 2)

TO LOSE WITHOUT BEING A LOSER /

PERDERE SENZA ESSERE PERDENTI

Edited by Roberto Pinto

20th September ö 10th November 2005

Kompleksi Goldi Tirana

Following the official opening of TIRANABIENNALE3 with TEMPTATIONS,
the first of the five Sweet Taboos episodes, curated by Edi Muka and
Gezim Qendro, the 20th September 2005, TO LOSE WITHOUT BEING A LOSER
inaugurates at Kompleksi Goldi in Tirana, edited by Roberto Pinto.

If in TEMPTATIONS, artists like Olafur Eliasson, Phil Collins, Pal
Hollender, Ingrid Mwangi and Armando Lulaj worked on exploring the
relationship between taboos and the notion of power, in the second
episode, TO LOSE WITHOUT BEING A LOSER, Roberto Pinto invites us to
reflect on the theme of losing as a modern taboo. Thus, the loosing
is intended not as the incapacity of winning as much as an
alternative way of considering the world.

ãWe all know ö writes the curator ö that he who always wins, does not
know it is possible to lose, he does not see suffering or hardship,
and in any case, when he sees them, he considers them to be
inevitable. According to a purely Darwinian model, he even considers
them as just and natural consequences.ä

These are presuppositions around which the second episode, TB3
articulates. The artists consider the inconsistencies of the single
global model, face social and political problems, both questioning
the weaker points as well as re-discussing the stable points.

TO LOSE WITHOUT BEING A LOSER includes sculptures, installations,
projections and sound projects by: Maja Bajevic, Rebecca Belmore,
Tania Bruguera, Carlos Garaicoa, Jota Castro, Minerva Cuevas, Jimmie
Durham, Ghazel, Edi Hila, Emily Jacir, Margherita Morgantin, Ingrid
Mwangi, Lucy Orta, Cesare Pietroiusti, Stefano Romano, Nedko Solakov,
Enzo Umbaca.

Roberto Pinto is an independent curator, he lives ad works in Milan.
He has been the chief editor of Flash Art and is now the curator of
the Fondazione Ratti in Como. He has organised and curated various
exhibitions, among which: Arte all'Arte (2000), Transform (2001),
Dimensione Follia (2004), Spazi Atti (2004) he was also one of the
curators of the 5th Biennale in Gwangju (2004). He is presently a
lecturer in History of Contemporary Art at the University of Trento.
