Society

Are you interested in acquiring new skills and investigating the new
challenges of ubiquitous and location-aware computing?

Ubiquitous and locational Computing  in which millions of computers become
embedded into the world around us and interact with us wherever we are - is
the most exciting and significant technology to emerge since the Internet.
It promises to transform the ways in which we work, shop, travel, learn,
socialise and play, but it also challenges many of our ideas of privacy and
the relationship between citizens, commerce and the state. Would you like to
investigate whether this revolutionary technology is an opportunity or a
threat?

This new Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Nottingham is
recruiting on to a unique and major new PhD programme to study the impacts
of the Digital Society. Supported by EPSRC and over 30 industry partners,
the partners will train a community of over 50 PhD students to become the
next generation of research leaders in this field within industry or
academia. Our students will benefit from:

* a fully-funded four-year PhD programme that integrates a leading-edge
research project with research training in interdisciplinary skills

* a personalised pathway through this programme that enables students to
gain a balance of skills across key technology areas, future applications,
and human and societal issues

* training in innovation and ingenuity to equip students for careers in
industry, from global companies to start-ups

* a three-month salaried internship at one of our partners including BBC,
BT, EADS Astrium, HP, IBM, Logica, Microsoft, Network Rail, Nokia, Ordnance
Survey, PARC, Scott Wilson and Thales (see full list below)

* regular seminars and meetings with industry representatives to develop
contacts with future employers

* an enhanced stipend of 15,000 per annum (home students only) as well as a
personal laptop

* supervision from international leaders in the field of location-aware and
ubiquitous computing, as well as other disciplines listed below

* use of over 3m state-of-the-art facilities including positioning and
sensing testbeds and transport simulators

* career guidance support tailored to individual needs

* office and laboratory space on Nottinghams award-winning Jubilee Campus

Due to funding restrictions, in the first instance these studentships are
only open to home/EU students.

We are interested in students from a wide variety of backgrounds including
computer science, engineering, psychology, sociology, business, geography,
geospatial science, geomatics, social science and the arts, providing that
they have an excellent first degree and can demonstrate an enthusiasm for
interdisciplinary research.
