About Craig Baldwin:
Craig Baldwin is a filmmaker and curator whose interests lie in
archival retrieval and recombinatory forms of cinema, performance,
and installation. Over the last two decades, his productions have
been shown and awarded at numerous international festivals, museums,
and institutes of contemporary art, often in conjunction with panels,
juries, and workshops on collage and cultural activism. His own
weekly screening project, Other Cinema, has continued to premiere
experimental, essay, and documentary works for over a quarter
century, recently expanding into DVD publishing. http://

About MOCK UP ON MU:
A radical hybrid of spy, sci-fi, Western, and even horror genres,
Craig Baldwin's Mock Up On Mu cobbles together a feature-length
"collage-narrative" based on (mostly) true stories of California's
post-War sub-cultures of rocket pioneers, alternative religions, and
Beat lifestyles. Pulp-serial snippets, industrial-film imagery, and
B- (and Z-) fiction clips are intercut with newly shot live-action
material, powering a playful, allegorical trajectory through the now-
mythic occult matrix of Jack Parsons (Crowleyite founder of the Jet
Propulsion Lab), L.Ron Hubbard (sci-fi author turned cult-leader),
and Marjorie Cameron (bohemian artist and "mother of the New Age
movement"). Their intertwined tales spin out into a speculative farce
on the militarization of space, and the corporate take-over of
spiritual fulfillment and leisure-time.

Ueber Craig Baldwin:
Craig Baldwin ist ein amerikanischer Filmemacher und Kurator aus
Kalifornien. Seine kuenstlerische Praxis kommt aus der Found Footage
Tradition der Westkueste der USA, die sich aus der Beat-Kunstbewegung
der 50er und 60er Jaher entwickelte. Baldwin experimentiert und
subvertiert in all seinen Produktionen das dokumentarische Potential
des Found-Footage Films, ob als "Pseudo-pseudo-
Dokumentarfilm" (Tribulation 99), experimenteller Collage-Doku (Sonic
Outlaws), oder "Compilations-Spielfilm" (Mock Up On Mu). Seine
Arbeiten wurden auf zahlreichen internationalen Festivals und
Ausstellungen gezeigt, oft im Zusammenhang mit Podiumsdiskussionen
und Workshops ueber Collagefilm und Kulturaktivismus. Sein Kino-
Projekt Other Cinema zeigt seit den 80er Jahren Experimentalfilme,

Ueber den neuen Film von Baldwin
Mock Up On Mu, USA, 110 min. 16mm auf DigiBeta
Mock Up On Mu ist ein hybrider "Collage-Spielfilm", der aus
verschiedenen Sci-Fi-, Spion-, Western- und Horrorgenres die
(größtenteils) wahre Geschichte über Jack Parsons (Crowleyit und
Gründer des Jet Propulsion Labs), L. Ron Hubbard (Sci-Fi Autor und
Gründer von Scientology), und Marjorie Cameron (Künstlerin und Mutter
der New Age Bewegung) erzählt.
Der Film ist eine verspielte Allegorie, deren Erzählkurve sich durch
die mythisch-okkulte Matrix der kalifornischen Nachkriegs-Subkulturen
zieht, die von „Raketenpionieren", alternativen Religionen und Beat-
Lifestyles geprägt waren. Bestehend gleichermaßen aus B- (und Z-)
Fiction Films und aus neu inszeniertem Material beschwören die
ineinander verschlungenen Geschichten eine spekulative Komödie über
die Militarisierung des Weltalls und über die Kolonisierung
spiritueller Erfüllung und Freizeit durch amerikanische Großkonzerne.
Ueber den Workshop
Im Workshop mit Craig Baldwin wird es um selbsorganisierte Konzepte
der künstlerischen Praxis gehen, die folgende Begriffe umfassen: Tote
Medien, Arte-Faktualität, Cinema Povera, Verfügbarkeit/Abrufbarkeit,
Fetischismus, Obsession, Situationismus und Microcinemas.
Craig Baldwin verwendet Found Footage am Rande des populären medialen
Bewusstseins und transformiert den traditionellen Dokumentarismus
durch provokative Kommentare, die eine Bandbreite an Themen
verhandeln: von geistigen Eigentumsrechten und zügellosem
Konsumdenken über amerikanischen Imperialismus, militärisch-
industriellen Komplex zu den Ursprüngen von Scientology.
Im Workshop wird er einen historischen Überblick der Praxis der
Reproduzierbarkeit geben, eine Vielzahl an seltenen Filmen und Videos
zeigen und einen Crashkurs der Found Footage Praxis vermitteln. Every
day there will be access to 16mm celluloid and splicers for hands-on
experience.
