LIGHTHOUSE AT CINE-CITY FILM FESTIVAL

Sunday 21 November 2010
Wednesday 24 November 2010
Saturday 27 November 2010

Lighthouse are delighted to be part of this
year's Cine-City Festival - Brighton's annual
celebration of film and moving image. We are
presenting a special programme of screenings
curated by Brighton-based artist, filmmaker and
musician, Ian Helliwell. Helliwell was one of the
artists who formed part of Lighthouse's prgramme
for the ResoVision television station, which
broadcast live from Frieze Art Fair last month.
His work sits within the tradition of
direct-filmmaking, where the filmmaker makes
direct contact with the filmstrip. For Lighthouse
and Cine-City, he has curated three screenings,
which explore the work of a diverse range of
experimental filmmakers who use this technique to
create stunning, abstract films. The screenings
take place on 21, 24, 27 November, and are a rare
opportunity for Brighton audiences to experience
distinctive and seldom-seen moving image
artworks. Cine-City and Lighthouse are also
presenting a talk by Eddie Berg, Artistic
Director of the BFI (2 December).

In his first screening, A Panorama of Cameraless
Film, Helliwell presents a fascinating line up of
contemporary direct animation from some of the
leading "Hand Eye Visionaries". With the focus on
less familiar work, the programme has a strong
selection of women film-makers who reveal a
variety of experimental approaches and styles.
This screening also presents audiences with a
very rare chance to see an example of early work
by Stuart Wynn Jones from the 1950s British
amateur animation collective, the Grasshopper
Group.

Films in the programme include:
Lauren Cook: Altitude Zero (2004, USA, 5`)
Naomi Uman: Hand Eye Coordination (2002, USA, 10`)
Jennifer Reeves: The Girl`s Nervy (1995, USA, 5`)

http://www.lighthouse.org.uk/whatson/ianhelliwell.htm

The second screening in the Hand Eye Visions
programme of direct animation focuses on the work
of Brighton's own Ian Helliwell. This screening
presents for the first time a retrospective of
his direct animation films, which were broadcast
on ResoVision at Frieze Art Fair last month.
Helliwell is an artist-filmmaker-musician. Having
begun intuitively at the start of the 1990s, he
has experimented with a range of techniques for
creating images directly on super 8 film. His
work is distinctive, if not unique in that he
also designs and builds his own electronic
instruments – Hellitrons and Hellisizers – which
he uses to make all the soundtracks of his films.
For anyone interested in colour, light and
animation and the synthesis of film and music,
this programme promises to be both an eye and an
ear opener.

Films in the programme include:
Deflection Currents (2005, 3`15)
Grid (2007, 2`20)
Chromaburst (2001, 4`55)
Angel Recovered (2003, 3`15)

Visions programme of direct animation presents
the work of Plymouth based film luminaries, Kayla
Parker & Stuart Moore. This must-see screening
presents the work of this experienced music and
film-making duo in Brighton for the first time,
and includes a new film the pair have made
especially for the event. Working in a variety of
formats from Super 8 to 35mm, and with a number
of commissions under their belts, the pair, have
produced a significant body of experimental,
cameraless work.

Night Sounding (1993)

A Short Walk (2004)

Lighthouse and Cine-City are delighted to welcome
Eddie Berg, Artistic Director The British Film
Institute (BFI) to Brighton. The BFI is the UK’s
leading organisation in promoting appreciation of
film and television heritage and culture.

In Lighthouse's December monthly talk, Eddie Berg
will be discussing the convergence of film,
moving image and contemporary art, the BFI’s work
as curator of the world’s most significant
collection of film and television, and the role
of BFI’s film festivals in showcasing new work
and giving independent filmmakers a voice. As
developments in government policy-making
impacting the British film industry continue to
unfold, this is a timely opportunity to hear
Eddie’s views on what the future may hold for
British filmmakers. Book early, as this is
certain to sell out.
