Dear Spectre,

in two weeks HMKV's exhibition Sounds Like Silence will open -- save the date! The exhibition will open on August 24, 2012 (7 pm) at Dortmunder U, jointly with the exhibition FLUXUS – Art for All! of the Museum Ostwall. (Free admission on the occasion of the exhibition opening.) Both exhibitions run in parallel until January 6, 2013.

In 2012 the world celebrates the centenary of John Cage’s birth and the 60th anniversary of the premiere of the composer’s “silent piece” 4’33’’ (four minutes, thirty-three seconds). This composition in three movements without intentional sounds is Cage’s most prominent work today. The new exhibition Sounds Like Silence, organized by HMKV, shows how artists continue to refer to 4’33’’, whether explicitly or by addressing wider issues such as silence and sound ecology. On display are more than 40 positions by international artists.

The exhibition is presented from 25 August, 2012 until 6 January, 2013 at Dortmunder U – Centre for Art and Creativity on four floors: on the 3rd and the 6th floor (the space for temporary exhibitions of the Dortmunder U) as well as at the Lautsprecher ("loudspeaker") space on the 4th floor, which will feature sound art pieces, and at the RWE Forum | U Cinema which will be used for performances, artist talks and film screenings.

Important: The exhibition will start in the wee hours of the morning on 24 August 2012 with the radio broadcast "Sounds Like Silence" by Inke Arns and Dieter Daniels on Deutschlandradio Kultur (00:05 – 01:00). CD recordings of the programme are available in the exhibition (Gruenrekorder 2012).

Sounds Like Silence features works by, among others: Manon de Boer (NL/BE), John Cage (US), Martin Creed (UK), Merce Cunningham (US), Guy Debord (FR), Einstürzende Neubauten (DE), Pierre Huyghe (FR), Yves Klein (FR), Kollektive Aktionen (RU), Shigeko Kubota (JP/US), Christian Marclay (US), Bruce Nauman (US), Max Neuhaus (US), Nam June Paik (KR/DE), People Like Us (Vicki Bennett) (UK), Robert Rauschenberg (US), Harald Schmidt (DE) & Helge Schneider (DE), Mladen Stilinovic (HR), and Gillian Wearing (UK) – to mention only a few.

Between the opening of the exhibition on 24 August 2012 and the anniversary of the premiere of 4'33" on August 29, 2012, HMKV will run a week-long programme of events with live performances and concerts (a.o. by Dave Allen), artist talks, a panel with the authors of the publication accompanying the exhibition, lectures, film screenings and field trips. The complete programme of events can be downloaded as a PDF at (http://www.hmkv.de/_pdf/HMKV_SLS_Veranstaltungsprogramm_Web_Einzelseiten.pdf).

The exhibition is accompanied by the extensive publication Sounds Like Silence (ed. by Dieter Daniels and Inke Arns, Leipzig: Spector Books, 2012), which opens a scientific perspective on 4'33" and is an essential part of the whole project. The publication includes new theoretical essays with different interpretive approaches as well as a catalogue section. Furthermore, the publication documents notations and variations by John Cage, versions, derivations and continuations of the "silent piece" from 1962 to 1992.

A one-hour radio broadcast on Deutschlandradio Kultur as well as a CD (published by Gruenrekorder) are completing our publication activities.

Already now you can find comprehensive information about the exhibition on our website www.hmkv.de. Here, you can also download the flyer for the exhibition opening.

Looking forward to seeing you at the opening!

Best regards,
Inke Arns
