Embroidered Digital Commons workshops with Ele Carpenter and Emilie Giles

All welcome

The Embroidered Digital Commons is a collectively stitched version of ‘A
Concise Lexicon of/for the Digital Commons’ by the Raqs Media Collective
(2003). The project is part of the Open Source Embroidery project,
utilising social and digital connectivity, exploring the language of the
digital commons facilitated by Ele Carpenter.

Would you like to stitch a term with us?

Furtherfield invites all gallery visitors to take part in one or more of
our Saturday morning embroidery sessions and come together to stitch the
term 'Meme' from the lexicon, chosen in relation to the theme Being
Social. A cultural ‘meme’ is the way in which an idea spreads.

Embroidered Digital Commons seeks to hand-embroider the whole lexicon,
term by term, through workshops and events as a practical way of
close-reading and discussing the text and its current meaning. The term
'Meme' will be stitched by 20-40 visitors to the gallery and the
resulting patches used as the basis for a short film depicting the
sequence of embroideries.
