Dear colleagues,

We cordially invite you to the symposium Fluid Cosmologies I, which is hosted at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities on November 2, 2012, from 2 pm to 7 pm on the occasion of the exhibition Carved Air by Yunchul Kim. Experts from different scientific disciplines will reflect on the central aspects of the exhibition: dark
matter simulations, experiments on fluid instabilities and
interdisciplinary approaches at the interface of science, media and art.
This joint reflection from sciences and humanities examines the
significance and potential of the concept of the “fluid skies” in
contemporary cosmology, astrophysics and media theory. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Lucía Ayala, art historian and curator of the exhibition Carved Air. Friday, November 2, 2012, 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.Symposium Fluid Cosmologies IEinstein Hall | Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and HumanitiesJägerstr. 22/23 | 10117 Berlin | 5th floorThe talks will be held in English. Programme2 p.m.       Welcome by Heike Catherina Mertens, Director of Arts and Culture, Ernst Schering Foundation2.15 p.m.      Seeing the invisible: Supercomputer Simulations of the dark side of the Universe. Prof. Dr. Volker Springel (Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies)3.15 p.m.      Beyond gravitation: The subtle magnetic Universe. Dr. Rainer Arlt (Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics, Potsdam)  4.15 p.m.      Coffee Break5 p.m.           Programme & imagination. Prof. Dr. Siegfried Zielinski (Berlin University of the

Korean artist Yunchul Kim explores the enormous epistemological
complexity behind contemporary scientific processes. With his
fluid-kinetic sculptures and electrochemical drawings, he reflects some
core aspects of current astrophysics and the objects analyzed by
scientists which have lost their direct relation to immediate
experience. Using new tuneable materials which can be aesthetically
manipulated, Yunchul Kim examines unsolved scientific questions in an
artistic context. Saturday, November 3, 2012, 2 p.m.Guided tour of the exhibitionErnst Schering Foundation | Unter den Linden 32-34 | 10117 BerlinThe artist and the curator will be present. Saturday, November 3, 2012, 8 p.m.Descend. A concert with electroacoustic works by Jacob Kirkegaard, Yunchul Kim and Jörg Lindenmaier
