The workshop explores ways to collaborate musically exchanging synthesis and composition information over a network. 

Laptops have become musical instruments that can be used much like traditional instruments in collaborative spaces where people come together to share musical ideas and experiences. However, laptops also provide opportunities for creating sounds and composing music beyond the sonic characteristics and playing styles of acoustic instruments. We are going to explore how the SuperCollider programming environment enables building collaborative synthesisers and sequencers that can be shared and exchanged between participants. 

The main topics will include creating synthesisers to send, play and control them on other remote laptops, learning basics of computer networking, working with collaborative sequencing and how to start creating performances using these techniques. This hands-on workshop invites active participation and collaboration, so please bring your laptop with SuperCollider installed and an open mind to exchange and share your ideas with others.

Music Hackspace is a London based platform for experimenting and interacting with sound and technology. We incorporate diverse methodologies and aim to create an open playground and exchange of ideas and sounds that embraces new and old technologies. Newly available open source platforms, both hardware and software, are granting far wider accessibility to new interactions with music and audio than have not been possible before. It’s with these technologies that we base our programme of workshops, artist talks and meetups, and hope to encourage people of all backgrounds and skill levels to create and engage with music in previously unrealised ways. Alo Allik is an Estonian sound artist who has performed throughout the world at a number of festivals, including Transmediale, Piksel, State-X, TodaysArt, ShinyToys, Pluto, Üle Heli, Network Music Festival, Inter/Sections, etc. His aesthetically and geographically restless lifestyle has enabled him to traverse a diverse range of musical worlds including DJ-ing electronic dance music, live electronic jam sessions, electroacoustic composition, free improvisation and audiovisual performances. His many collaborations with a diverse range of artists include live coder Shelly Knotts, singers Sharon Gal and Andrea Young, writer Tom McCarthy, sound artist Keiko Uenishi, and many others. In recent years he has been actively participating in the Algorave movement developing a style he describes as noisefunk which combines traditional rhythm patterns with evolutionary synthesis algorithms. Currently, Alo works as a researcher, programmer, and lecturer in London, while continuing to perform his visuals and music to audiences worldwide. http://tehis.net <http://tehis.net/>

Anna Xambó is an experimental electronic music producer and researcher with a focus in computer music, live coding, collaborative interfaces for music, audience participation with mobile devices, real-time music information retrieval and computer science (CS) education. Her postdoctoral research work at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London especializes in the design and evaluation of new tools for music performance. She is also part of the team behind the European Commission funded project AudioCommons.org, which aims at bringing Creative Commons audio content to the creative industries.  http://annaxambo.me/ <http://annaxambo.me/>
