Dears,

We invite you to the Conference on June 26 2019 at 2pm, of Francesca Ferrando from NYU, who will speak about “Philosophical Posthumanism and Existential Risk” at the University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée (George Perec Library, Rue des Frères Lumière, 77420 Champs-sur-Marne).

Francesca Ferrando is a special guest of the LISAA Laboratory, University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée. This lecture is based on her book “Philosophical Posthumanism”, which is coming out with Bloomsbury in June 2019.

ABSTRACT
This lecture will focus on the notion of ‘the human’ and the contemporary need of urgent redefinition. At a time of radical bio-technological developments, and in light of the political and environmental imperatives of our age, the term ‘posthuman’ provides an alternative. Dr. Ferrando will explore the philosophical landscape which has developed as a response to the crisis of the human, including several movements, such as: Posthumanism, Transhumanism, Antihumanism and Object Oriented Ontology. She will explain the similarities and differences between these currents and offer a detailed examination of a number of topics that fall under the “posthuman” umbrella, including the anthropocene, artificial intelligence and the deconstruction of the human. In this lecture, Dr. Ferrando will afford particular focus to Philosophical Posthumanism, defined as a philosophy of mediation which addresses the meaning of humanity not in separation, but in relation to technology and ecology. In this sense, she will explain that Philosophical Posthumanism is not only a post-humanism, but also a post-anthropocentrism and a post-dualism. The posthuman shift that she invokes, thus emerges in the global call for social change, responsible science and multispecies coexistence.

Dr. Ferrando lives and work in New York City and is a leading voice in the field of Posthuman Studies and founder of the NY Posthuman Research Group, she has been the recipient of numerous honors and recognitions, including the Sainati prize with the Acknowledgment of the President of Italy. Her book "Philosophical Posthumanism" is coming out with Bloomsbury Publisher in June 2019. In the history of TED talks, she was the first speaker to give a talk on the topic of the posthuman. US magazine "Origins" named her among the 100 people making change in the world.
