MOREHSHIN ALLAHYARI | She Who Sees The Unknown: Aisha Qandisha curated by Jonathan
Monaghan
Please join us tomorrow for the opening of Aisha Qandisha, a 3D animated video from
the series She Who Sees The Unknown by the Brooklyn-based artist Morehshin Allahyari.
Morehshin Allahyari [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001vfdg5g1Z3yNi8C_LKDU0KRS-EM6PI1hRgB5eO_7SDM_JzNgnJN9_CaW06z-PGgNWwT5Aj_JoKaqjAvAJ4n7a10qOGUWciKOeUIVd_GRi8wD8OUCNKbS-VdaU4DylniLfqTIVVWhoQ7kL-j-WElVzrgV1QQDZ7hyVHArNVgPywf8fPp1Z6yN3Tcj3-vAQ917nVOwOtvt-Mj7xCZfrWJ8pWH7OLIU0FuUDifatN9KAF6yFZ7UPf-Zd2eb5xW_17oGx5fbvRVs_v5SuLy6S6FLuBNnRy_01FEGV&c=JIImCtR6_BRjBIyiTBeTbOsiM9hI8YOSziDeaG8oxGzpiLLWRW_ksw==&ch=mBwq3oBcjbTZn3z-wSNha-xwaW-GISDFWOvZwLYAlblkRIWwUkDV7w==]
is an artist, activist, writer, and educator who was born and raised in Iran and
who moved to the United States in 2007. Her work deals with the political, social,
and cultural contradictions we face every day. In She Who Sees The Unknown, Allahyari
uses 3D modeling, 3D scanning, 3D printing, and storytelling to re-create monstrous
female/queer figures of Middle Eastern origin. She mines the traditions and myths
associated with these supernatural creatures to explore the catastrophes of colonialism,
patriarchy, and environmental degradation, "re-figuring" the past to activate and
preserve what may have been forgotten or misrepresented.
This project is organized by DC digital artist Jonathan Monaghan [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001vfdg5g1Z3yNi8C_LKDU0KRS-EM6PI1hRgB5eO_7SDM_JzNgnJN9_CaW06z-PGgNWMb1zN7K86kS8QaFsf6NcVCV57ofwhQGilUHpefg-D7BzASGpraEI3twbOn_L3ah0o1BxEvvUkcYPn1H9tfr52sH3D8P_ZzLvmterzPHuCJbSmAXQkPsvCz0x9S3m9foMpCkiEThmRMC67aC8P-6JN55kjwKMyhnAbNVtkBzl06612_zg7-A4o9-j5rNAuaIf2cVf5Sl4H3ROylJAbXu0o9COJo6I4x2N&c=JIImCtR6_BRjBIyiTBeTbOsiM9hI8YOSziDeaG8oxGzpiLLWRW_ksw==&ch=mBwq3oBcjbTZn3z-wSNha-xwaW-GISDFWOvZwLYAlblkRIWwUkDV7w==],
furthering his practice and providing DC with the opportunity to engage with the
ideas that Allahyari brings forth. Monaghan writes about the project, "Technology
and conceptions of the future are inherently intertwined and artists who embrace
computer graphics in their practice are often concerned with the issues of a technology-driven
future. Artists like Allahyari sense that if we are to build a better path forward,
we must first rectify the past. By excavating forgotten or ignored histories, Allahyari
tells a more robust narrative of the human story, one unbeholden to traditional
perspectives tainted by colonialism or masculinity."

WPA is honored to support Artist Mother Studio (AMS) through a continued partnership
which began in 2018. AMS is a pop-up studio residency awarded to artists who are
caregivers, with priority selection going to women and non-binary parents.
- AMS pushes back against the isolation of contemporary society to build solidarity
and community amongst artist caregivers.
- AMS rejects the idea that women/caregivers should give their labor freely as both
artists and caregivers.
- AMS believes the fight for a better world is best fought inter-generationally.
This month, AMS launched their third residency, this time at Red Dirt Studios, which
will run until April 30, 2020. Three fantastic artists were chosen from an open
