the real estate bubble

The Big Crash is an expansive exhibition, which branches out in many forms,
such as painting, electronic art, sound and music, net art, Virtual
Reality, sculpture and installation art. The exhibition embraces Steiner’s
concept of the contemporary interdisciplinary Gesamtkunstwerk and started
in early 2019. The thematic departure point of the exhibition is the
instability of the real estate market as a consequence of extreme
gentrification. Something that is actively taking place in all bigger
cities around the globe. There is a pending ‘big bubble crash’ awaiting as
a consequence of this and the exhibition deals with the growing imbalance
this movement creates and its effects on society.

The Big Crash is intended to grow and the first parts are based on a
software that mines the Internet for real estate data, here websites that
work as intermediaries of rented properties, rooms and flats. Berlin is the
chosen example since the market and the city's gentrification has expanded
in such a high speed over the last few years. This is, however, also
dramatically seen in other places, like in Aarhus, and specifically the
current situation of the project space Spanien 19c has served as an
inspiration.

The foundation of the piece is a software written by Malte Steiner which
harvests the data of the real estate websites, e. g. prices and
square-meters, but also the visuals of the advertisements. These are
processed by Machine Learning algorithms. The results are used in the
creation of artworks, shown with alternative display technologies like
e-paper and OLED, and used as the base for 3D-printed kinetic sculpture, in
a Virtual Reality environment, as well as in a new approach to traditional
oil painting, where Steiner depicts the AI-generated image fragments on
canvas.
