The question on my mind is a philosophical one:<br><br>Internet Revolution vs. Internet Gradualism. <br><br>How can we change the status quo? Through direct revolutionary action, or through gradual change?<br><br>The answer seems to me that Revolutionary action results in violent and bloody conflict.<br>

The Middle East, the Revolution, and the Internet<br>
<br>
Tech-utopians and tech-doomsayers continue their debate over the impact<br>
of the internet on politics and democracy. Meanwhile mass demonstrations<br>
have spread across the Middle East, causing the downfall of one<br>
government and putting others on high alert. In each case we know<br>
technology has played a vital role in mobilizing protestors and<br>
transmitting information in real time around the globe. The existential<br>
threat it plays to a regime has been demonstrated by Egypt's internet<br>
shutdown. "The Middle East, the Revolution and the Internet" brings<br>
together experts in the field to discuss and debate the issues in real time.<br>
<br>
Access's live web symposium will examine the impact of new (social)<br>
media and the internet on political freedom. On the one hand, we can<br>
expect grassroots activists to make use of technology to facilitate<br>
their activities. On the other hand, the new era provides opportunities<br>
for dictators and regimes to survey and monitor like never before. With<br>
voices from academia to the front line, Access will explore how<br>
activists use the net, the challenges for state actors, and the likely<br>
winners and losers in the digital cat and mouse game.<br>

In February, CologneOFF 2011 starts its program series of videoart<br>
from different geographical regions around the globe - with videoart from<br>
Northern America, basically USA.<br>
The first released component represents the solo feature of 6 videos by<br>
the US media artist - Henry Gwiazda, who is following his own individual artistic path.<br>
In his animated 3D worlds he pays attention to the minimal physical and psychological movements<br>
of his protagonists in an everyday world, and makes hidden secrets visible,<br>
always fascinating the viewer who does not know what is coming next.<br>

Agricola de Cologne, the creator and curator of CologneOFF 2011,<br>
who is also co-curator of this event of digital art, is presenting CologneOFF 2011<br>
as it was previously shown on Delhi International Arts Festival 12-13 Dec 2010,<br>
consisting of the basic festival program CologneOFF VI and the programs by 5 curators<br>

= >> Media Art History 2011 - Rewire will increase the voltage and<br>
ignite key debates within the internationally distributed network of<br>
histories, which takes account of the questions surrounding<br>
documentation and methodologies, materiality, and agency. Rewire aims<br>
to illuminate the global phenomena of media art. Given Liverpool*s<br>
historic role as a center of British industry and its leadership in<br>
the sector of digital culture, we shall explore the relationship<br>
between the industrial revolution and the information age with respect<br>
to media art around the world. Considering the international scope of<br>
the histories of media art, science and technology, Rewire is also<br>
listed as part of the "McLuhan in Europe" programme, and will take place<br>
concurrently with The Asia Triennial in Manchester and Abandon Normal<br>
Devices, the North West's festival of new cinema and digital culture<br>
which returns to Liverpool in September 2011.The reviewers especially<br>
welcome proposals for presentations that resonate thematically with<br>
these events.<br>

* Media art history in relation to the biological, biomedical and<br>
ecological sciences<br>
* Colonial experiences and non-Western histories of media art, science<br>
and technology<br>
* How the field of science and technology studies (STS) can offer<br>
useful models for new paradigms for art history<br>
* Writing art history in a technologised and scientific culture,<br>
including the documentation of media art and how it is changed in a<br>
technologised and scientific culture<br>
* Local histories and practices of media art<br>
* Relations between the histories of media art and those of computing<br>
and new technologies<br>
* New paradigms and alternative discourses for media art and media art<br>
history, such as, for example, craft, design, social media, or<br>
cybernetics<br>
* The relations between art, science, technology and industry, both<br>
historically and now<br>
* The heritage of British industry and computing and its global<br>
