Sean Reynard ist ein Exemplar der in Deutschland eher selten 
vertretenen Hybriden zwischen Künstler, Komiker und Filmemacher. Nach 7 
Jahren kehrt er Berlin den Rücken, um nach London zu ziehen. Anlässlich 
dieses Abschieds präsentiert Sean Reynard im Projektraum des Deutschen 
Künstlerbunds eine Auswahl seiner Videos, die sowohl von Einflüssen der 
British Comedy, als auch des social realism der 60er und 70er Jahre 
geprägt sind.

„In meinen Filmen steckt eine Spur Absurdität und Surrealismus, 
verbunden mit der ätzenden Normalität des Alltags. Für mich geht beides 
eine wunderbare Mischung ein - ‘sozialer Surrealismus‘, wenn man so

Sean Reynard, 1971 in St.Helens, UK, geboren, studierte am St.Helens 
Technical College (Expressive Arts) und an der Sheffield Hallam 
University UK BA Fine Art. Mit seinen Videoarbeiten nahm er u.a. an der 
Manifesta 4 teil.

Sean Reynard on Sean Reynard:
"I have been living in Berlin since 1998, during which time I have made 
the transition from making sound installation/sculpture and improvised 
music, to concentrating solely on making short films. However, my 
sound-related background plays an important role in my film making. In 
fact, sometimes it is the sole inspiration, as some videos are realised 
with the sound or music as the starting point, and the whole idea and 
visualisation emerges from it.
I also have a keen interest in filmic styles and techniques, spanning 
music videos, commercials, television programs, and of course feature 
films and documentaries.

I tend to make references to British culture, even more so having been 
away from England, which perhaps enables me to make more objective 
observations. Some people make comparisons to British comedy in my 
work, and there are certainly many influences from old and more 
contemporary British comedy in them. I also have a lot of interest in 
British social-realist films of the late 60s and 70s, as they usually 
focus on certain characteristics of people from all classes, showing 
their inadequacies and weak points, plus their strengths and successes. 
My films tend to have a tinge of absurdity and surrealism about them, 
combined with the tedious normality of the everyday, and for me this 
fusion of the two gels beautifully together - ‘social surrealism’, if 
you like.

So far I have produced many short films ranging from one minute to 
eight minutes in length. This format suits me well as I can tell a 
story in this condensed amount of time, or simply allow the viewer to 
peer in and out of a given situation. I like the idea of using and/or 
abusing the set formats of short film (the introduction, the build up, 
the punch line at the end, or even better; the unexpected twist). I 
have witnessed these formats in countless short films in many a film 
festival, and become tremendously bored of their predictability. There 
are set patterns to how to tell a story or how to take in information, 
and it is interesting for me to play around with these notions, to 
challenge and change the rules of storytelling."

Sean Reynards Abend ist eine Veranstaltung im Rahmen von open: house

open: house öffnet den Projektraum für die Bespielung durch Mitglieder 
und Gäste. open: house sucht nach dem Spezifischen des Deutschen 
Künstlerbundes als einer von KünstlerInnen betriebenen 
Organisationsform und stellt die Versuchsanordnung auf eine breite 
Basis. Wer Initiative ergreifen möchte, das Netzwerk zu nutzen, neue 
Verbindungen herzustellen und Formate öffentlichen Nachdenkens 
ausloten, ist dazu eingeladen.
open: house ist zwischen Werk und Werkzeug angesiedelt.
