Der in Wien lebende Medienkünstler Carlos Katastrofsky (a.k.a. Michael
Kargl) präsentiert vom 5. bis 19. Oktober 2007 die Ausstellung
stimulus/response im Projektraum Sonnensegel. Zu sehen sind Arbeiten seines
aktuellen künstlerischen Schaffens seit 2004. Mit Netzkunst, "Software Art"
und interaktiven Installationen spannt Katastrofsky einen breiten Bogen von
Neuer Medien Kunst zur rein konzeptuellen Hinterfragung zeitgenössischer
Formen der Kommunikation und Interaktion und überprüft diese auf ihren
Beitrag zur aktuellen Kulturproduktion.

Ausgangspunkt für die Ausstellung stimulus/response ist das sowohl bei
Tieren, als auch beim Menschen bekannte Reiz/Reaktionsverhalten des
pavlovschen Experiments. Das Ausstellungskonzept widmet sich dabei auf
mehreren Ebenen der Figur eines Input/Output-Schemas und überträgt es auf
bekannte Strategien der Alltagskommunikation.

Die simple Annahme, dass einem Vorgang immer eine Ursache zugrunde liegen
muss, veranlasst den Künstler, technische Dispositive hinsichtlich ihrer
Verwendbarkeit in künstlerischen Arbeiten zu untersuchen: Die fotografische
Werkserie "entropy" etwa setzt sich mit dem physikalischen Begriff der
Entropie auseinander und erweitert diesen um die Einbindung dislozierter
Netzbilder, indem thermodynamische Vorgänge im Realraum mittels Web-Kameras
zur Produktion von Bildmaterial im Netz herangezogen werden. Der Begriff des
Ortes im Kontext weltweiter Vernetzung, in Verbindung mit der steigenden
Tendenz alles zu überwachen und sich überwachen zu lassen, werden durch die
Bearbeitung von Zeit und Bewegung auf unkonvertionelle Weise dargestellt.

Dabei kommt ein gewisser öffentlich ausgelebter Voyeurismus zum Tragen, der
auch die Verbindung zur pseudopornografischen Arbeit "stimulus/response"
herstellt und als Leitmotiv für die Ausstellung herangezogen wurde. Der/die
BetrachterIn wird durch eine "Pornomaschine" in ein Spiel zur Verdeutlichung
der zugrundeliegenden Marktmechanismen von Serialität und Wiederholung
eingebunden. Die ökonomische Ebene dieser interaktiven Installation verweist
auf die Glück verheißenden Botschaften des kapitalistischen Regelwerks, das
dem Netz zugrunde liegt und das zusätzlich in der Arbeit "objects of desire"
in konzeptuelle und angewandte Settings übersetzt wird.

Diesen strukturgebenden Gesetzmäßigkeiten des World Wide Web steht jedoch
eine übergeordnete und unstrukturierte Masse von unendlichem Datenmaterial
gegenüber. Der Widerspruch zwischen Struktur und Chaos findet in der
fünfteiligen Arbeit "SINS" Audruck, bei der mittels Stichwortsuche zufällig
gefundenes, audiovisuelles Material zu jeweils einminütigen Videos extrem
verdichtet wird. Die generative Videoinstallation "welcometothejungle"
produziert ihrerseits ohne menschliches Zutun Daten-Bilder, die auf einer
Schwarz/Weiß-Überlagerung basieren und in Form eines simulierten Perpetuum
Mobiles als digitales 0/1-Phantasma gelesen werden können.

Invitation to the opening of the exhibition

Carlos Katastrofsky - stimulus/response

The exhibition will run from Oct. 6th - Oct. 19th 2007, Mo - Fri from 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m.

The Viennese Media Artist Carlos Katastrofsky (a.k.a. Michael Kargl)
presents his solo show "stimulus/response" at the project room "Sonnensegel"
from October 5th to 19th 2007. The exhibited works comprise his artistic
creation dating from 2004 up to the present day. Including Net Art, Software
Art and interactive installations Katastrofsky deals with New Media Art as
well as with the pure conceptual analysis of contemporary forms of
communication and interaction and thereby scrutinises its contributions to
current cultural productions.
Point of departure for the exhibtion titled "stimulus/response" is Pavlov's
experiment demonstrating the conditional reflexes of animals as well as
humans. The exhibition concept is dedicated to the notion of the
input/output-pattern on different levels, transferring the pattern to
well-known everyday acts of communication.

Induced by the common assumption that there always has to be a cause for any
act, the artist investigates technical environments regarding their
usability in the creation of artistic works: the photo series "entropy" ,for
example, deals with the physical concept of entropy and expands it by means
of inclusion of dislocated net images. These Images are produced by
translating  thermodynamic acts in "fleshspace" with web-cams into the
production of net-pictures. The concept of locality within the context of
global networks, in connection with the ongoing trend to overall
surveillance is illustrated in an unconventional manner by manipulating time
and space.

This surveillance, read as some kind of public voyeurism, ties in with the
pseudo-pornographic work "stimulus/response" and functions as a leitmotif
for the exhibition. With this "porn machine" the viewer is involved into a
game that hints at the underlying market mechanisms of seriality and
repetition. The interactive installation and its economic implications refer
to the auspicious messages of the capitalist system which constitutes the
basis of the net and is also examined in the work "objects of desire" within
a conceptual as well as applied setting.

Contradictory to these structuring principles of the web is the prevailing
unstructured mass of infinite data. "SINS" - a work consisting of five
videos, each of approximately one minute length – deals with the discrepancy
between order and chaos by condensing randomly collected audio-visual
material.  The generative video-installation "welcometothejungle", on the
other hand, produces data images in a self controlled manner. Based on a
continuous black and white overlap this piece can be seen as a digital 0/1
phantasm in the shape of a simulated Perpetuum Mobile.
