*Eine offene Diskussion zur geplanten "Leistungsschau junger Kunst aus 
Berlin" *

Bis zum 17. Dezember sind alle in Berlin lebenden Künstlerinnen und 
Künstler dazu aufgefordert, ihre Portfolios einzureichen, um sich für 
die Teilnahme an der für Sommer 2011 geplanten "Leistungsschau junger 
Kunst aus Berlin" zu bewerben. 600.000 Euro aus dem Landeshaushalt 
sollen für Recherche, Kuratoren und Katalog ausgegeben werden -- 
weiteres Geld für die Produktion der Ausstellung und den Bau einer 
mobilen Halle am Humboldthafen will der Veranstalter Kulturprojekte 
Berlin GmbH noch auftreiben.

Die Idee der "Leistungsschau" suggeriert einen auf Effizienz und 
Wirtschaftlichkeit getrimmten Kunstbegriff und nutzt das 
Innovationspotential aktueller Kunstproduktion für politische 
Interessen. Dem Regierenden Bürgermeister Klaus Wowereit scheint es 
darum zu gehen, durch die Masse der Einreichungen und die 
Star-Aufstellung des "Bestandsaufnahme"-Projekts ein Argument für die 
Realisierung "seiner" Kunsthalle zu erhalten -- rechtzeitig zum 
Wahlkampfjahr 2011.

Wir möchten diesen kulturpolitischen Schachzug zum Anlass nehmen, im 
Rahmen einer offenen Diskussion darüber zu debattieren, was wir aus den 
letzten beiden Jahren Temporärer Kunsthalle gelernt haben, wie Künstler 
und Künstlerinnen auf diesen und weitere "open calls" reagieren, was die 
zeitgenössische Kunstszene der Stadt -- institutionell wie auf anderen 
Ebenen -- auszeichnet, was ihr fehlt und wie sie nachhaltig gefördert 
werden kann.

Until December 17, all Berlin based artists are requested to submit 
their portfolios in order to apply for the "achievement show of young 
artists from Berlin", scheduled for summer 2011. 600.000 Euros from the 
state budget will be spent for research, curators and a catalogue -- 
more money for the production of the show and the construction of a 
mobile exhibition hall in the area of Humboldthafen still has to be 
raised by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH.

The idea of an "achievement show" suggests an understanding of art which 
is based on efficiency and effectiveness and uses the innovative 
potential of current artistic production for political interests. It 
seems that Mayor Klaus Wowereit tries to obtain arguments for the 
realization of "his" Kunsthalle by the sheer mass of submissions and the 
curatorial star-assembly for this "inventory" project -- just on time 
for the elections in 2011.

We want to take this cultural-political maneuver as an occasion to 
openly discuss what we have learned from two years of Temporäre 
Kunsthalle, how artists react on this and other "open calls", what it is 
that marks the contemporary art scene in the city -- institutionally as 
well as on other levels --, what it is missing and how it can be 
supported sustainably.

*SALON POPULAIRE*
SALON POPULAIRE is a meeting point for conversations on art and 
neighboring topics, for the convergence of different ideas, positions 
and contexts. Conceived as an informal social space with bar and kitchen 
it can actively be re-defined and used by and with its guests according 
to the respective needs.

SALON POPULAIRE is envisioned both on the basis of and as a departure 
from the history of the salon. Above all, it is a place at which 
knowledge is generated and exchanged. As a semi-public space it enables 
multiple scenarios, spanning the privacy of an apartment to the public 
of an institution. We experiment with formats that intend to dissolve 
the hierarchical structures of traditional presentations, podium 
discussions and seminars. Simultaneously we engage with the increasingly 
popular category of the event, which goes beyond conversations that take 
place in the home, cafe or at dinner with friends. The current dominant 
mode of dialogue in the contemporary art context is that 'one talks, the 
others listen'. Within this type of exchange the audience operates as a 
mere witness to the production of cultural surplus value. In contrast to 
this, we understand the SALON POPULAIRE as an invitation for joint debate.

SALON POPULAIRE is a project by THE OFFICE (Ellen Blumenstein / Fiona 
Geuss) and Arthur Berlin (Tanja Schomaker); spacial conception in 
collaboration with raumlaborberlin (Markus Bader)
