Out of money!
CRAC (Creative Room for Art and Computing) the artist run media lab based in
Stockholm is facing serious financial problems.
=46rom the first of November the CRAC-workshop will close if not a political=
 and
financial solution will take place,
CRAC is a multidiplinary production platform that has existed since 1997.
Crac is member based and run by the federation of Swedish digital artists (
SKODK ).
The aim of Crac is to find ways of collaboration between high-tech and vario=
us
artist practices.
The initial funding that made CRAC possible was project funding from the art
council, the foundation for the culture of the future and KK-foundation.
Now when the initial funds are finished CRAC is being advised to seek new
funds
from Stockholm city council but these funds can not cover the costs for the
project.
After trying a lot of different alternative solution the board of CRAC is
forced to close the media lab.
The CRAC project has generated a lot of credibility and also in a direct way
improved the quality of videos, prints and other techno-intensive modern art=
-
practices that has benefited the totality of Swedish contemporary art life.
The
political decision makers are aware of this.
The CRAC board is working to create a political solution that will solve the
financial problems.
Crac is leaving a big vacuum in the Swedish art scene.
The lab has 500 members and has been hosting international artists and the
project made in the CRAC-studio has been showed in various institutions in
Sweden, Europe and Internationally
Crac has also produces two exhibitions: Crac at Liljevalchs Museum in
September 2000 and =93Money- a commentary to the new economy=94 at Kulturh=
uset
during summer 2001.
As organization CRAC has established network within art, technique, science
and
research.
A series of collaborative projects has been made in Sweden and international=
ly.
Crac has also been very active on the international networking scene,
specially
in building the
NICE network but has also been part of BIN and ECB.
Crac has also published a web-publication about new media art: Crac in conte=
xt.
