10.15 Cinema by Other Means?
Conversation with Isaac Julien (2001 Turner Prize Nominee, Director of
Looking for Lingston, Young soul rebels, Paradise Omeros, Baltimore)
Does the move into the gallery really change the cinematic experience? Are
we made aware of the screen as frame?  Of image as object? Does narrative
still dominate structure? What sort of temporal and spatial disciplines are
required of the spectator?

Screenings and Presentations by Alison Craighead (Lecturer, Slade School of
Fine Art) and Jon Thomson (Research Fellow, University of Westminster)
What is the relevance of the gallery in the age of online access?
Does art spectatorship require public as well as private exhibition?
How can new media art resist its own technological hegemony?

2.00 Curating New Media
Presentation by Sarah Cook (Researcher in New Media Curating at the
University of Sunderland in conjunction with BALTIC, Guest Curator Banff
Centre of the Arts, co-editor of CRUMB)
Do the particular conditions of new media art challenge the traditional role
of the curator?  What are the aesthetics of presentation and archiving of
new media genres?  How do audiences respond to new media art in gallery
spaces?

3.00 Screening Alfresco
Presentation by Sandra Percival (Director, Public Art Development Trust)
What happens when the moving image moves out of the gallery into exterior
spaces?  Does it take on the characteristics of the drive-in, sculpture or
the advertising hoarding? Or does it become part of the architecture on
which it is projected?

3.30 Falling in Love Again with 16mm
Presentation by Brad Butler and Karen Mizra (Curators, 291 Gallery, London)
Why is there a resurgence of interest in making Super-8 and 16mm film for
the gallery?  Does this indicate nostalgia for the index in the age of
digital media?  Will it return the gallery to the black box?

4.30 A Final Hypothesis:  Index and Mimesis
Presentation by Sharon Morris (Slade School of Fine Art)
What is the source of the quest for greater resolution?  What is the
psychoanalytic basis of our desire for the index?
