GRACE WEIR : A FINE LINE
EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION
LION ARTS CENTRE, NORTH TERRACE @ MORPHETT STREET, ADELAIDE

6PM THURSDAY 26 AUGUST-25 SEPTEMBER Tues-Fri 11-5, Sat 2-5
GALLERY TALK 4.30PM FRIDAY 27 AUGUST

Grace Weir employs the medium of film to depict space and to explore
events in relation to time. The works however, are not primarily to
be considered as part of a cinematic genre, where time is so often
manipulated at the mercy of a story, but perhaps most tellingly they
employ a strategy of subversion by placing a camera at the mercy of
time.

Weir's places her films within a gallery context. This change in
priority of the medium of film helps to place extraordinary
significance upon events, and also to act as a device for capturing
'real' time in relation to whatever subject that comes under the
scrutiny of her lens. As subject matter, the interior view and
exterior landscape figure heavily as a backdrop within her highly
conscious line of enquiry. This selective approach helps to inform
her own particular method of image making which aims to make sense of
our world together with an enquiry into the forces that dictate its
physical presence.

Within the exhibition 'A Fine Line' works contain a main projection
alongside the more low key presentation of a related 'footnote'
displayed on a nearby monitor. Taking the form of an explanatory
dialogue, the footnote not only acts as an informant to the main
piece as art but also more significantly to scientific enquiry. In
this sense it's perhaps these, with one metaphorical foot in either,
which most tellingly occupy the territory somewhere in between the
codes of art & science.
