3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series
This series is designed to focus on emerging artists working in the
state, producing exciting new work that both challenges and inspires
the viewer. Scheduled to run continually in the third-floor Atrium
Gallery, this exhibition program provides audience members with nearly
uninterrupted, contemporary-focused programming. Each exhibition is on
view for a period of roughly seven weeks, allowing two weeks to
de-install and prepare the next exhibition for hanging/installation.
Each exhibition includes a full-color fold-out brochure, with text
content focused on the concepts, history, methodology, and production
of the work, as well as five to seven color plates from the artist’s
portfolio. These extended gallery guides will provide documentation of
all of the exhibitions included in 3rd Floor: Emerging Artist Series,
and will aid the artist in developing a portfolio of critical/scholarly
writing pertaining to their work. This piece can then be used to
document an exhibition history, with the hopes of assisting the artist
in future exhibition possibilities at other institutions, galleries, or
further venues. To provide information concerning the creative
processes present in contemporary art production, each artist will also
deliver an opening lecture to inform the public of their concepts and
practices. As has been done in the first three exhibitions in this
series (2004-2005), the artists selected for the series will be
introduced to one another, encouraged to attend each other’s opening
receptions, and to contact one another as appropriate to support
professional development.
Artist Selection, Submission, and Review Procedures
Any artist residing within the State of Minnesota is eligible to be
considered for the 3rd Floor: Emerging Artist Series. RAC selects
emerging artists for inclusion based on the review of applications by
the program director and the RAC Exhibition Advisory Board. Selection
is based on demonstrated quality, innovation, and excellence in the
artists’ work. Other criteria include: a compatibility of the artists
work to the overall themes and goals of the exhibition series (e.g.,
emerging artist); ability to work within the parameters of the
exhibition schedule; the quality of the exhibition proposal; and
compatibility of the artists work to the dedicated gallery space.
Applications (see exhibition proposal submission form which is
available for download below) are accepted from June 15 – August 1,
2005 and are reviewed in August and September by the program director
and the Exhibition Advisory Board, composed of working artists,
curators, teachers, and arts professionals. From this review, a
schedule for the next season of six exhibitions, each roughly
seven-weeks long, is determined. Completion of the entire process can
take up to two months, with artists being notified by the end of
October.
Southeast Minnesota Artists Exhibition Series
To fully serve our mission and support artists working within the
region, RAC will dedicate an exhibition series to artists who are
producing new work that that currently reside in any of the eleven
counties of Southeastern Minnesota (counties included Dodge, Fillmore,
Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and
Winona). These geographic parameters follow those determined by SEMAC,
the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council. With many artists producing
work of high quality and seeking exhibition opportunities, the RAC was
compelled to directly serve this population.
This series is designed to focus on emerging, mid-career, or
established artists working in the SE Minnesota region. Scheduled to
run in the second-floor Accent Gallery, this exhibition program
provides audience members with consistent regional programming. Each
exhibition is on view for a period of roughly seven weeks, allowing two
to three weeks to de-install and prepare the next exhibition for
hanging/installation. Each exhibition includes a full-color brochure,
with text content focused on the concepts, history, methodology, and
production of the work, as well as two to three color images from the
artist’s portfolio. These gallery guides will provide documentation of
all of the exhibitions included in the Southeast Minnesota Artists
Exhibition Series, and will aid the artist in developing a portfolio of
critical writing pertaining to their work. To provide information
concerning the creative processes present in art production, each
artist will also deliver an opening lecture to inform the public of
their concepts and practices.
Artist Selection, Submission, and Review Procedures
Any artist residing within the eleven counties specified above is
eligible to be considered for the Southeast Minnesota Artist Series.
RAC selects artists for inclusion based on the review of applications
by the program director and the RAC Exhibition Advisory Board.
Selection is based on demonstrated quality, innovation, and excellence
in the artists’ work. Other criteria include: a compatibility of the
artists work to the overall themes and goals of the exhibition series;
ability to work within the parameters of the exhibition schedule; the
quality of the exhibition proposal; and compatibility of the artists
work to the dedicated gallery space.
Announcement of our request for applications will be published in an
information packet that will be mailed to art and cultural institutions
throughout the region, to our extended artist database, and will be
published on the RAC webpage. We will also take steps to list this
exhibition opportunity on mnartist.org and other web-based resource
locations. The Diversity Council of Rochester will be consulted to
help identify outreach strategies to connect request for application
information to individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds throughout
the state.
Applications (see enclosed exhibition proposal submission form) are
accepted from July 12 – September 31, 2005 and are reviewed in October
by the program director and the Exhibition Advisory Board, composed of
working artists, curators, teachers, and arts professionals. From this
review, a schedule for the next season of six exhibitions, each roughly
seven-weeks long, is determined. Completion of the entire process can
take up to two months, with artists being notified by the end of
October, 2005.
RAC furnishes publicity, an opening reception, and the printing and
mailing of gallery guides for each exhibition. RAC will insure artwork
while on exhibition.
