SARAH BEDDINGTON: Parallel Lines and Other Stories
============================
13.-17 JULI 2005
ERÖFFNUNG: MITTWOCH, 13. JULI 2005, UM 19-22 UHR
Sarah Beddington is a British artist who works with painting, video and
installation. While much of her video work depicts non-domestic,
publicly accessible spaces, she does not attempt to exoticize or
glamorize them. Rather, she records unique social and aesthetic
circumstances, which manifest themselves in a highly accidental and
contingent manner. Under her unwavering gaze, everyday occurrences are
transformed into a cunning theatre of the 'non-happening.' None of the
work has been staged, and typically takes shape as a single continuous
shot that runs for approximately five minutes or less.
Beddington received her Masters of Fine Art from the Central St
Martin’s College of Art and Design in 1996. Her work has been shown at
the Whitechapel Gallery in London, ArtBasel Miami, Momenta Art in
Brooklyn, and White Box and Artist's Space in New York. An installation
and series of paintings can be seen in the exhibition "Vanishing Point"
curated by Claudine Isé at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus.
Beddington lives and works in London and New York.
Parallel Lines (2005), 5:13 min
Shot at the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy, a scene from a
classic black and white film is interrupted by the movement of museum
visitors through the ribboned surface of a projection screen. This work
will be projected above the stage in the main space of Raum 3.
Shanghai Series (2005):
Dragon Night, 6:30 min
Blowtorch Sleepers, 3:14 min
Concrete Touch, 1:00 min
Hotel ATM, 1:35 min
Umbrella Crossing, 2:38 min
Lotus Man, 2:05 min
The ‘Shanghai Series’ represents the artist's observations while in
residency in Shanghai last year. Filmed exclusively during the Full
Moon festival and the week-long holiday commemorating the Cultural
Revolution, each of these shorts capture transient moments in the city.
Invisible Woman (2004), 2:43 min, endless loop
A stationary shop window on a metropolis sidewalk reveals different
layers of interaction between static and cursory figures.
This exhibition is part of IN ABSENTIA, a spring/summer film and video
series curated by Alena Williams (see upcoming programs below).
