Subject: Takeaway Festival Commssions Deadline Extension 28/12/08
Takeaway 2009 - Call for Work - Online submission open
Takeaway Festival of Do It Yourself Media Exhibition: DEADLINE extended
until 28. December 2008
Two development awards of £1,250 each are available.
The Takeaway Festival tries to identify the changing interfaces between
technology and practice. It celebrates a D-I-Y praxis that is infusing the
creative landscape and challenging the status quo of top down software and
proprietary licensing. We want to encourage artists who are ground breaking
and original, who find interesting solutions for old problems and
demonstrate new relationships between technology and other media. If this
describes your work, please make a submission as soon as you can via the
website clearly stating under which option you are making your proposal.
What are we looking for?
INSIDE OUTSIDE
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) *NB The Oyster Card must act as the
trigger for work submitted in this category. Artists are asked to submit
proposals of work that utilize RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). This
technology is normally used for retail stock control, supply and security
but also has great potential as a way of identifying changes in the
environment. Electronic RFID tags are attached to objects to allow them to
transmit certain signals within a short distance or enclosed space.
Artists may choose to use RFID to share information, collect information, or
to create reactions to the transmitted signals. Ideas involving the use of
shop windows that are easily accessible to the public are welcome.
RFID tags are part of the manufacture of many products and everyone has at
least one on their person at any time. The selection panel will be looking
for work that exposes this hidden nature or RFID. (You will find some useful
links on the website that will enable artists who have not used RFID to
learn about the technology. These also include existing examples of projects
and associated information).
DIY MUSIC INSTRUMENTS
Celebrating the 20 years anniversary of DIY and the rich history of building
digital instruments. Musicians have been the major driving force behind the
current DIY revolution. In early times, institutions like IRCAM -cycling74,
later MaxiMsp and Pure Data, IVREA -Adruino and MIT - processing, have
supported the beginning of divers platforms of software and hardware that
allowed musicians to build new instruments and create new objects, sounds
and compositions. Some of these hard and software platforms became
independent companies and all had an tremendous influence on current DIY.
Takeaway is eager to honor that pioneering spirit by dedicating the 2009
Takeaway platform to this genre. We are aware of the current practice where
artist and designers are building DIY apparatus that is used in musical
performances or as standalone applications. We invite amateurs as well
professionals to submit there work.
You are asked to submit proposals in this category that challenge accepted
definitions of what musical instruments are and how they should work, either
used for performances on stage or standalone applications interacting with
audiences.
Your proposal could involve the idea of an instrument that is entirely
software based or that implements touch or sensor based hardware, triggering
sound, noise or music.
