Die Einzelausstellung Claudia Kapp - YOUYOU bietet im EDITH-RUSS-HAUS
für Medienkunst einen Einblick in aktuelle Arbeiten der Preisträgerin
des zwölfmonatigen New York-Stipendiums 2010 der Niedersächsischen
Sparkassenstiftung und des Niedersächsischen Ministeriums für
Wissenschaft und Kultur.

Titel gebend für die Ausstellung ist ein Motiv, das die Künstlerin
während ihres New York-Aufenthalts fotografiert hat. Das im Foto
sichtbare YOUYOU wird als Leuchtschrift außen am Haus wieder
aufgenommen. Die Ausstellung gruppiert sich um Arbeiten, die in New York
entstanden sind, und zeigt weitere ältere wie ganz neue Werke, die
thematisch zu dem „Pursuit of Happiness“ passen, dem (sehr
amerikanischen) Streben nach individuellem Glück, das Claudia Kapp sich
als Leitmotiv ihrer künstlerischen Feldforschung in New York gewählt
hat. 

Eine Fünf-Kanal-Videoinstallation, in der Sonnenaufgänge gefilmt
wurden, stellt den Bezug zur Außen angebrachten Leuchtschrift her und
umfängt die Besucher im zentralen Ausstellungsraum. Die Arbeit Closer,
sich auf einem Plattenteller rotierende Flaschen, stellt die Frage nach
der wahren Gestalt der Dinge und ihrem Abbild in Frage. Noch irrealer
scheint sich der Hund in der Videoarbeit Dann kamst du mir die Seele
nehmen, 2011, zu verhalten, suchend und getrieben hinter einer Hecke hin
und her rennend.
Die Videoarbeit Winslet–Ryder–Watts, 2011, spiegelt Aspekte des
Glückstrebens in einer Befragung mit einem ebenso ambitionierten wie
realitätsfernen Drehbuchautor, den Claudia Kapp am Strand traf wieder.
Die ortsspezifische Arbeit Celebration, eine für das Untergeschoss
konzipierte Licht-Musik Installation, lädt ein, sich selbst in die
Ausstellung zu integrieren und eine eigene Form von „Pursuit of
Happiness“ anzuregen.

On the occasion of the New York Fellowship of Lower Saxony Savings Bank
Foundation and the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture, the
EDITH-RUSS-HAUS for Media Art presents 2010 prizewinner, Claudia Kapp
(b.1974 in Freiburg, living in Berlin). The scholarship, initiated in
1999 by the state of Lower Saxony and presented since 2005 to-gether
with the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation, consists of a twelvemonth
stay in the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York and
two exhibitions in Lower Saxony art associations.

The neon sign on the roof of the EDITH-RUSS-HAUS, which reads YOUYOU,
was inspired by a photograph that Claudia Kapp took in Upstate New York.
The sign, with its dual fluorescent colors, glows at the EDITH-RUSS-HAUS
in the colors of a perpetual dawn. The sun also rises in a five-channel
video-installation, which is installed on the first floor.

The exhibition deals with works which were produced in New York and
presents also older works thematically dealing with the "Pursuit of
Happiness" which Claudia Kapp took as motif for her research in New
York. Other works take on questions of meaning and illuminate the
central theme, the "Pursuit of Happiness," sometimes in a slapstick
manner or in the form of numerous interviews and slides.
The work Closer raises the question about the true shape of things and
their image: In this work, the image of bottles on a rotating turntable,
filmed and heavily overexposed, is played back in a projection. This
generates an abstract, poetic, perpetually circling motion of
red-yellow-blue elements. The dog in the video work, Dann kamst du mir
die Seele nehmen  seems to behave in a similarly unreal manner,
searching and driven, running to and fro behind a hedge.The video work
Winslet–Ryder–Watts reflects aspects of the pursuit of happiness
in an interview with an ambitious and unrealistic script author whom
Claudia Kapp meets on a beach.

The dreams dealt with and represented in these works sometimes express
a deep melancholy but also the clear belief in making dreams come true.
With Celebration, a light and music installation designed for the
basement, invites visitors to integrate themselves in the exhibition and
create their own form of pursuit of happiness.
