CALL FOR ENTRIES: DIGITAL LATIN AMERICA
June 7 - August 30, 2014
?
APPLY AT: http://tiny.cc/DLAcall (you must first create a free account with CaFE to apply to call)?

DESCRIPTION:?
516 ARTS presents Digital Latin America, an international exhibition with a weekend symposium and Downtown Block Party. The project is an outgrowth of the Latin American Forum for the award winning 18th International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA2012) produced by 516 ARTS last fall (www.isea2012.org). Digital Latin America explores the North/South axis of cultural development and exchange between South America, Central America and the Southwestern United States, with a focus on New Mexico as the Northern tip of Latin America.

Connecting individuals, cultures, traditions and social histories to a rapidly expanding global network remains not only a pressing challenge, but a profound opportunity and necessity.  The utopian notion of closing the digital divide represents a paradigm shift that encourages the participation of all communities and cultures to express themselves through contemporary methods and continue the complex terrain between global and local, virtual and real, and political and private, in the creation of work that proposes alternative understandings of technology, art and cultural exchange.

ABOUT THE CALL AND VENUES:?
This call for entries is for both gallery projects to be in the exhibition and a variety of visual art, demonstrations and performance works for the Downtown Block Party.

The exhibition will be based at 516 ARTS, a museum-style venue in the center of Downtown Albuquerque, with off-site projects at The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History and possible other sites. It will highlight contemporary artists from Latin America and the Southwestern United States, including New Mexico, and will showcase high caliber, innovative, interactive artworks that are accessible to the general public and presented in an educational context. The exhibition will include digital media as well as work that addresses technology through traditional mediums. The exhibition opens Saturday, June 7 and runs through Saturday, August 30, 2014.

The Downtown Block Party is a one-day, outdoor event that will feature artworks, demos, interactive projects, hands-on activities as well as music, dance and food, all celebrating the cultures of Latin America and New Mexico. The event will take place on Central Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in front of 516 ARTS in Downtown Albuquerque to allow for a wide range of projects that include those intended for both daylight and darkness.

JURY
?The exhibition will be both juried and invitational. The juried work will be selected by the project planning committee, which includes leading minds from academic and cultural institutions in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina as well as New Mexico and the region.
