University Master in Digital Arts. IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Calendar: October 2014 to December 2015

Language: Spanish

Credits: 90 ECTS.

Our Interdisciplinary Arts Master's Program is designed for graduate
students, engineers and working adults to explore questions about digital
audiovisual practice and culture within the intersection of the Arts,
Humanities, Science and Technology.

General Goals

The Master's Degree in Digital Arts aims to contribute to the formation of
audiovisual professionals in different aspects of creative production in
the field of interactive audiovisual communication.

Goal 1: To approach both theoretically and experimentally the creative and
technical aspects of digital media and their role in cultural production.

Goal 2: To promote expression through information and communication
technologies which lead to new visual, musical and interactive art forms.

Goal 3: To provide analytic models and tools to explore specific languages
induced by digital media and particularly, interactive audiovisual
communication and networking.

Goal 4: Master the techniques for generating, processing and editing of
images and sounds, and various software environments for authoring visual,
musical and interactive compositions.

Goal 5: To understand and to experiment with code especially as applied to
generative, algorithmic and procedural aspects of computer programming as a
form of creative writing,

Goal 6: Encourage the use of digital media for the production of innovative
and significant works.

Goal 7: To train students in fundamental change at the formal, conceptual,
contextual, relational and narrative levels of audiovisual culture that
occur with the introduction of electronic and digital media.

Goal 8: Encourage and promote new forms of human-computer interaction, and
the creation of physical, tangible, embedded and embodied interfaces.

Goal 9: To promote contemporary artistic practices using digital
technologies to express aesthetic and critical forms of discourse. The
emphasis is on the arts, beyond the hegemonic discourse on media and
digital culture.

Teaching methodology includes lectures, seminars and practical work under
the supervision of a tutor. Being an intensive face to face program,
attendance, is strongly recommended, as it constitutes a fundamental part
of our university education.

Students are assessed for the 1st Term (core modules, 286 hours) through
final examinations in February; and for the 2nd Term (optional modules, 200
hours) in June. In some cases, professors may choose to set various
activities (workshops, projects, mockups, hands-on discussions, etc.)
throughout the year which, if successfully completed, can complement or
replace the final examination.

As part of the curriculum, each student must complete 200 hours work in our
professional practice program. For this purpose, our partners include some
of the most relevant institutions and creative arts organizations and
innovative industrial companies in Barcelona such as Macba, Hangar.org,
Barcelona Media, MediaEstruch, CCCB, Phonos Foundation, Voctrolabs or
ReacTable Systems.

The Final Master's Project (186 hours) is coordinated and supervised by a
tutor chosen by the student from the academic staff. It consists of an
original piece of creative work with which the students demonstrate they
have effectively acquired the creative and technical knowledge and skills
taught throughout the course.

University Pompeu Fabra, has held 17 editions of the Masters' program in
Digital Arts over the years. This constitutes a solid background.
Throughout these years, over three hundred students have successfully
completed the program, which has allowed them to improve, in most cases,
their capabilities and skills in order to meet the new challenges of their
careers.
