Subject: CFP: The Journal of Art Theory and Practice: Art, Science, and
Technology

Deadline: Apr 30, 2015

In his 1923 lecture "Art and Technology: A New Unity," Walter Gropius
addressed his modern vision with the Bauhaus in favor of technological
invention and possible expansion of our experience. His progressive
belief in the unity of art and technology still appeals to us, facing
unprecedented development of technology. Against a backdrop of Gropius's
unifying vision, we'd like to open up discussions on the various
formation of art in relation to the advance of modern technology. In the
era when being technologically correct would matter as Lorne Falk has
pointed out, a unity of art and technology should be critically
reconsidered for its validity and viability. An enthusiastic embrace of
modern technology has contributed to inventing a new aesthetic, thereby
expanding our senses. Along the triumphal path of inventions though,
some ethical questions could be posed. Possible discussion includes, but
not be limited to, historical investigations of the efforts unifying
disparate areas, interactions between art, science, and technology, a
reflection on the mixed blessing of the interactions, any viable
avant-garde vision in the integration, a critical view on the
abuse/misuse of technology for a new art. The term "art" includes visual
art, photography, film, video art, architecture, new media art, and
bio-art. We welcome submissions from art historians, critics, artists,
curators, philosophers, administrators, professionals, and scholars,
whose interdisciplinary interests would be drawn to the issue. All
perspectives and methodologies are welcome.

The Journal of Art Theory and Practice is a peer-reviewed publication.
Affiliated with the professional society called Korean Society of Art
Theories, the journal is published twice a year both online and in
print. In June and December 2015 we plan to publish two volumes with a
thematic issue: "Art, Science, and Technology," for which we would like
to encourage submissions.
