*Call for papers : International and Interdisciplinary Symposium*

*Digital Magic *

*November 13 &14, 2017.*

*Deceptive Arts, Machine, Magic, Media*

*Location: Paris-Est University and The « **Musée des Arts forains »**
(Paris)*

*Scientific Directors :* Miguel Almiron (UPEM, LISAA), Sébastien Bazou
(Artefake), Chu-Yin Chen (UP8 INREV-AIAC), Judith Guez (ART&VR
Factory-Laval Virtual ; UP8 INREV), Giusy Pisano (ENS
Louis-Lumière/Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3/IRCAV).

Putting the words « magic » and « digital » together might seem strange,
the first being an unseizable phenomenon (illusion, trickery, fantasy and
ghost), the other rising from a technological tangible field (computers,
cell phones, RV, RA, holographic remote-presence devices, special effects).
Nevertheless, both of them call upon an uncertain space, potentially
favourable to illusion. Yet, the introduction of new digital, technological
tools into arts (cinema, television, theater and digital art) has had a
certain impact on the creation process and made it possible to revive the
illusionistic potential, making the magic instant emerge in works of art.
Thus, the illusions in animated images, from Georges Méliès to Zach King or
Michel Jaffrennou, emphasized the magical effects through the use of
special effects and was more amazing than a simple technical prowess.

At any time, illusionists have been using technical and technological means
in their performances in order to « catch us out on our customary beliefs
and our classical way of reasoning » (S. Alzaris). Innovations in optics,
acoustics, physics and electricity found their place in the performances of
Philippe Talon, Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin or Henri Robin.

Today, the Internet and digital technologies have blurred the frontiers
between the real and the virtual and made it possible to create illusion
and magic. Thus, the digital offers new forms of « magic » components
thanks to virtual and augmented reality (RV/RA), Mapping, 3D animation,
immersion and interactivity. These different tools and digital devices
make the border between artists and magicians sometimes porous, as we can
see, for example, in Marco Tempest’s work

In order to define this magical interstice, this symposium proposes to
establish a dialogue between magicians, image technicians, artists,
researchers and theorists working on (magical) illusion and the digital
world. It is also an invitation to study the way in which the magical
modes, by testing digital technologies in sonorous and visual devices, and
in the arts, produce ruptures between the real world and the virtual one. How
do artists draw their inspiration from magic in order to cause that shift
into an uncertain illusionist space ? How do magicians use new
technologies to fill us with wonder and bring the magic moment to life ?
How does technology transform the perceptive modes of art (photography,
cinema, television, theater, digital art) ? What is the impact on the
creative process ? How did the outcome of the digital world move the
practice of illusion effects among artists and magicians ? How deceptive is
the digital? Last, how does creative research romote magical effects with
the digital ?

This symposium has been organized in the context of the « Les Arts
trompeurs. Machines. Magie. Médias » (2015-2018), supported by Labex
Arts-H2H/ENS Louis-Lumière and several partners, l’IRCAV, the LISAA, Paris

*Appel à communication : Colloque International et Interdisciplinaire*

*Magie Numérique *

*13 et 14 novembre 2017.*

*Les Arts Trompeurs. Machine. Machine. Médias*

*Lieux : Université Paris-Est et Musée des Arts Forains (Paris)*

*Direction scientifique : *Miguel Almiron (UPEM, LISAA), Sébastien Bazou
(Artefake), Chu-Yin Chen (UP8 INREV-AIAC), Judith Guez (ART&VR
Factory-Laval Virtual ; UP8 INREV), Giusy Pisano (ENS

Or, l’introduction

INREV-AIAC, etc.

*Axes possibles *:

- Magie et Réalité Virtuelle et Augmentée.

- Magie et effets spéciaux
