About the exhibition:

"The Withdrawal of the Red Army / Возвращение Красной Армии/ Den røde armés tilbaketrekning"

The threefold exhibition title points in different directions, dependent on the viewer’s perspective. Возвращение doesn’t mean «withdrawal», but «homecoming». In certain context, as in the expression “withdrawal from grave”, withdrawal denotes “resurrection”. Similarly, the exhibition itself has been in a continuous process of transformation, changing through encounters with different political and institutional circumstances.

The Withdrawal of the Red Army takes the form of a re-actualization of different modalities of resistance and a meditation on creative solutions in situations of stress, trauma and hardships.

Thematically, it revolves around notions of history writing and constructions of reality through language, the negotiation of collective trauma through games and play, camouflage, appropriation and repetition, alternate endings as well as questions of originality and authenticity of the work of art.

Artists in the project include Yoko Ono, Lee Miller & David E. Sherman, Sean Snyder, Ivan Galuzin, Oleg Samoilov, Leonard Rickhard, Amilcar Packer, Gustav Metzger, Asta Gröting, Yakov Chernikhov, Vasilii Baranov, Dmitrii Sveshnikov, JG Ballard, John Savio, Taus Makhacheva, Sergei Chebotar, Alexei Jankowski and Igor Diakonov.
