International Media-Art-Histories-Award for Prof. JORGE LA FERLA 

 

The international jury of the prestigious MediaArtHistories Award has
unanimously voted for Jorge LA FERLA as the 2025 winner of the award. The
ceremony takes place at the MediaArtHistories Conference “Re:generative” in
Manizales/Bogota on May 9th. 

 

Previous winners of the lifetime award are Barbara STAFFORD, Werner NEKES,
Anne Marie DUGUET and Christiane PAUL. This time, the conference will be
held in cooperation with the International Imagine Festival under the
direction of Felipe Londoño. 

 

Professor Jorge La Ferla is awarded by the international jury (Andres
BURBANO, Laura LEUZZI, Felipe LONDOÑO, Yu-Chuan TSENG and Oliver GRAU) for
his outstanding contribution to the field of Media Art History. His career
as a researcher, teacher, curator and programmer has profoundly shaped the
development of media art in Latin America and the world, leaving a legacy
that has transformed both artistic practice and academic research. 

 

La Ferla has dedicated his professional life to the advancement of art, film
and audiovisual media. He was chair at the University of Buenos Aires and
tenured professor at prestigious institutions such as the Universidad del
Cine and the Universidad de San Andrés, in Argentina. He has also
contributed significantly to academic programs at universities in America
including the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, the Universidad de los
Andes, the Universidad del Valle and the Universidad de Caldas, in Colombia.
Throughout his career, he has taught seminars and workshops that have
explored the boundaries between analogical and new technologies. He was the
academic coordinator of the Seminars for media artists from Latin America,
organized by the Antorchas Foundation in programs associated with the
Foundations Andes, Vitae, Rockefeller and McArthur.

 

His impact as a curator and programmer is equally significant. The last four
decades he has organized international exhibitions and screenings of film,
video and multimedia in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Among his
achievements is his participation as a curator of the "Visiones del Sur"
(1994) and "Visionarios" (2009) international series, pioneering shows that
connected Latin American audiovisual practices with global audiences. His
role as coordinator of landmark events such as the Franco-Latin American
Video Art Festival and the MEACVAD, Muestra Euroamericana de Cine, Video y
Arte digital with international guests from America and Europe has cemented
his position as a leader in the field. He has curated solo exhibitions of
latin american media artists in Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Mexico City. La
Ferla was a jury member for international awards, Rockefeller Foundation
NYC, Locarno Video Festival, Videobrasil, BIM Geneva, BIM Buenos Aires,
among others. 

 

In the field of research, Professor La Ferla has edited more than 50
publications on audiovisual and media. These include "Cine, video,
multimedia: the rupture of the audiovisual I (2007) / II (2008)"; "Art,
science and technology. A Critical Panorama" (2010); Televisions (2013);
"Intermedia. Essays on an Academic Practice (Szlifman) (2022) texts that
have become essential references for scholars and artists. He is the author
of "Cinema (and) Digital: Approaches to possible convergences between
cinematography and the computer" (2009). He also developed an
interdisciplinary approach that integrates theory, history and practice,
promoting a critical dialogue between the arts and technologies. For the
University of Caldas, La Ferla was the editorial coordinator of "The Medium
is Audiovisual Design" (2007) an essential work for those who explore the
intersection between technology, audiovisual media and design. This text
brings together critical reflections and studies that address audiovisual
design as an interdisciplinary field, integrating perspectives from art,
film, communication and digital narratives.

 

The International Image Festival of Manizales is a space where La Ferla has
left an indelible mark. As a recurring collaborator, he has contributed with
workshops, conferences and curatorship’s that have raised the festival's
profile on the international scene. His commitment to the Festival reflects
his passion for cultural exchange and the promotion of media art as a vital
field for addressing contemporary challenges. 

 

Jorge La Ferla's influence transcends borders and disciplines. His work has
inspired generations of artists, academics and curators to explore new ways
of thinking and creating in a world increasingly mediated by technology. His
vision, innovation and commitment to the development of the global media
arts community make him an exceptional candidate for this award. 

In short, Professor Jorge La Ferla's contribution to the field of media art
history is vast and invaluable. His work not only enriches academic
knowledge but also drives the growth of Media Art as an essential discipline
for understanding the relationship between art, science, and technology in
the 21st century. The ceremony takes place at the MediaArtHistories
Conference in Manizales/Bogota on May 9th.
