9 evenings reconsidered: art, theatre, and engineering, 1966

40 jahre ist es her, dass die "9 evenings" in new york stattgefunden haben. die aus diesem anlass von catherine morris kuratierte ausstellung  wurde 2006 am mit - massachusetts institute of technology präsentiert und ist nun zum ersten mal in europa zu sehen.  der damalige initiator war der für die bell telephone laboratories in murray hill, new jersey tätige elektronik-ingenieur billy klüver, der bereits in anderen zusammenhängen künstler hinzugezogen hatte, wenn es um die lösung technischer probleme ging. im vorfeld der "9 evenings" wollte er den anderen weg gehen: die idee war, dass diesmal die ingenieure die künstler unterstützen sollten, ihre vorstellungen umzusetzen.
"es geht um drei elemente, die sich aneinander reiben: die künstler, die ingenieure und das publikum. diese drei parteien müssen sich miteinander arrangieren und es kann sein, dass das noch jahre dauern wird. schließlich ist es eine vollkommen neue situation und da ist es doch besser, probleme so lange ungelöst zu lassen, bis der organische prozess zu einer lösung führt. der anspruch, am ende 2000 menschen ein fertiges produkt vorführen zu wollen, scheint überholt und kaum dem gerecht zu werden, was sich zwischen den künstlern und wissenschaftlern entwickelte. außerdem glaube ich, dass zahlreiche probleme durch umso relevantere fragestellungen ersetzt werden, die sich aus dieser art der zusammenarbeit von künstlern und ingenieuren ergeben." billy klüver

"das wannseekonferenzstück festung handelt vom heutigen reden über den deutschen beschluss zur vernichtung der juden". ein hörspiel, das mit den mitteln der medialen überzeichnung das jetzt-, hier- und dabeisein als letzte bedeutung des daseins vorstellt. nicht der gegenstand sondern dessen umsetzung im hörstück lassen die akteure allesamt zu komikern werden.

forty years have passed since the "9 evenings" took place in new york. the anniversary exhibition curated by catherine morris was first presented in 2006 at mit - massachusetts institute of technology - and is now being shown for the first time in europe. the original project was initiated by billy klüver, an electronics engineer at bell labs in murray hill, new jersey. he was accustomed to enlisting artists' help to solve technical problems. for the "9 evenings", he sought a different path: this time, engineers would help artists to realize their concepts.

"there are three elements fighting. the artists, the engineers, and the audience. these three will have to come to some resolution. it seems to me that this will take several years. and i think that's good. because the situation is really new. and it's better to leave problems unsolved until a solution develops through an organic process of experience with this new thing. after all, the idea of having 2000 people present as an audience to some end product might have been an obsolete, habitual thing to do, which didn't really apply to what had been going on between the artists and the engineers. i don't know. but I'm sure that many, many problems will not so much be solved as abandoned in favor of other problems more pertinent to what can come of this way of working." billy klüver

"the wannsee conference piece 'festung' is about the current discussion of the german decision to eliminate the jews." a radio play that uses the means of medial overrepresentation to describe the state of being present in the here and now as the last meaning of existence. not the object itself, but its transformation into an audio work turns all of the actors into comic figures.
